Hi everyone,
I have done a search but didn't find the answer to my question so here goes........
My viv has underfloor heating set to about 30 degrees. The air is set to a temp of about 28 degrees (at the hot end) with a ceramic lamp.

Should both the heat mat and ceramic lamp be on all day and all night all year?

I have read different opinions. Some people say leave the lamp on 24/7 and have the mat on during the day and others say the opposite.

What do you all recommend?

Hey-

2 heat sources for corns aren't necessary really. Most corns do very well with just a heatmat, statted of course. I am not sure what you mean by underfloor heating though? Is your viv wooden, and if so, is the mat in or under it? How much of the viv does the mat cover? (Sorry for the many questions!) Also, what do you use to monitor the temps? Using the dials on the stats can be fairly inaccurate. Digital therms are very good.

My lot are running at around 27-29c on heatmats, and do very well on them. The ceramic is also fine, just a matter of personal choice. However, if you use just one heat source then you will have a spare heating set-up..... and you know what that means!

When I got my two snakes they didn't have any heating at all so I wanted to move them into a palace!! I made them a tank that has twice the floor space.

It is made of melamine/particle board. 1/3 of the bottom I routed out, placed a heat cord and then siliconed a piece of glass down over it. This way the heat cord heats up the glass which then heats up the substrate. This is on a thermostat. If you have a look over in the "Show us your setups" thread and you can see mine.

The ceramic lamp is also on a thermostat and the air is around 28 degrees.

Should the lamp be on a timer so as to replicate the suns heat?

Does your heat bulb emit any light at all? If it does you could just replace it with one of those ones that don't if your worried about the lighting. I found that when mine were on bulbs, I had ones that emitted a red light, I don't know if snakes can see red but they were fine with this on all day and night. I don't know ow heat cables work but I guess they act like a meat mat? If so you could just choose one way of heating, which ever one your preference.

A very special super, duper thanks for K :3

I would just use one or the other, no need to have them both on, but yes one of them will need to be on all the time.

Its a waste of money and time really, only really large bodied snakes need ceramics and bulbs, using both is not going to benefit you or the snake in anyway.
Save yourself a few quid and stick with the mat.
None of my corns have lights at all, all that do are the boas.

Thanks for the help guys. Think I will put the ceramic on a timer to mimic the suns warmth and see how that goes.
I want my ladies to have a 5 star viv!
