It depends how deep the vivs are aswell as the snake is ready for a bigger home when the length of the snake is the same as the length+depth of the viv.

some snakes grow bigger faster than others, and how much you feed them can decide their growth rate, mine is 2 in october and she was 4 foot 10 on her last shed. i used to have her weekley feeding on:

1 pinkie then
2 pinkies (when one went down quick)
1 fuzzie
2 fuzzies (same as above)
2 small mice
2 mediums
now she is on 1 large.

when ever she was eating the 2 with no problem and at good speed i went up a size, never had a regurge either.

i jusged it also by, if the mouse was about 1 and a half ish size her head then go for it :D

I realise that this has worked for you Lee, but I would just like to point out that the size of the prey in relation to the snake's head doesnt actually make any difference as their jaws stretch so much. What is much more important is that the prey is not more that 1.5 times the width of the snake at its widest part.

But you are right in what you say about snakes growing at totally different rates and you can feed 2 hatchlings the same food and they can be different lengths and weights....so there is no definite way to calculate it.

Sounds as though you got the answer you needed though Natalie....and I hope you will keep us up-to-date on your DIY project!
