Can someone clear something up for me? A reptile shop owner had a go at me for not having light bulbs in my vivs, but I'm under the impression from various places that bulbs are not essential. She was telling me that corn snakes need to bask to get their heat, but most places I've looked say that they absorb heat from their surroundings, especially from the ground.
(She was also very patronising and quite blatantly trying to sell me stuff that I just don't need, and telling me that my yearling Luna NEEDS to be in a three foot viv and oh look here are some for sixty quid. I went elsewhere and bought her a nice RUB for less than a fiver... not going back there! I shall stick to my usual, friendly, chatty place.) |

She quite clearly doesn't have a clue about what she's talking about, corns get most of their heat from the ground, not the air, so no, they don't need a bulb, however, it won't hurt them either as long as if its used for heat its statted. The only snakes that really need a bulb are tropicals, they need nice warm air and higher humidity. |

As I thought. *sigh* I've been on a little tour of the reptile shops in my area this morning and my usual place is so much the best than the other two. One of them was advertising individual meerkats for sale as pets; as soon as I saw that I turned tail and left. |

Yeah I said that to her; the repsonse was "They come out to bask in the daytime (yeah, and get munched by passing god-knows-what) and they DO need daylight. They ARE from America you know." REALLY? And there was me thinking Carolina was in Scotland. |

Gotta love ignorant shop keepers, there're two decent places in Bristol but the bigger shop is out of the way for me, I feel sorry for the reptiles in her shop she clearly doesn't have a clue. |

I just love outsmarting people like this, it's brilliant,
And oh so funny when I made some stubborn worker walk out because she refused to admit she was wrong that thermostats were essential.. |

Some people in these places just can't help themselves. I like the ones who say 'trust me' and then spout the biggest load of dribble you've ever heard!!!

Corn's don't bask as far as I know, it's more lizards that bask. |

Exactly, coz lizards are more dirunal and corns are crespecular, with LOW light levels these people fail to understand you need HIGHER ligh levels to bask under a light.. |

My old petshop was convinced snakes basked too. So much so that when I bought a viv from them they put a bulb each end of the viv. |

Snakes will bask, but not as long as most lizards (though that is totaly species dependant). |

It would be interesting to see what colour bulb they would have supplied. My supplier set me up with a red light because they said it can be on all the time as it is a light that snakes cannot see it just looks like twilight to them. I am in the process of changing over to ceramic heat lamps as they last longer. |
