Oh Azz, I am so sorry to hear that Jay has gone .

These are some notes I made on lost snakes and hopefully you can use some of them.....

The first thing you have to remember is that corn snakes are amazingly hardy so can survive under difficult circumstances, so dont panic (easily typed but not easily done, I know).

To start trying to find Jay - when you look for her start from the very top. Ceiling. Start slowly come down from there to top of lampshades if any, down electric wires, anything that dangles from the ceiling. Then you choose the least cluttered wall and start to go down it methodically. If you are moving in a month then you may have started boxing things up, but work along these same lines....if there are shelves, everything comes off them and only gets put back once it's been inspected, books opened, etc. If there are cupboards, the drawers come out completely, and if possibly, the cupboard or closet gets pulled away from the wall so the area behind it can be searched too. The frame of mind is to inspect every surface no matter how unlikely. The floor and any object on it gets done last, and any carpets would get their underside inspected too if possible. If still no go, I'd go under the floorboards. For those awkward places with the pipes I'd get a good torch and a mirror, so you can inspect the hidden areas. Apart from "every surface" I'd also think as if I'm looking for something much smaller e.g. think you're looking for a contact lense. Check near any heat sources - near radiators, pipes, in the oven, the washer, behind the fridge, computer leads, behind tv, sterio, boiler...they will search out heat.

Do any of your seats/sofas have holes in she could have got into?

Make sure you check all clothing, towels etc, make sure you check dirty stuff about to go in the washing machine...one forum member nearly sent his escaped snake for a wet wash.

Try putting the viv on the floor near a dish of water, she may decide to come home by herself...... You must put a number of water dishes down cos a snake can go for a long time without food but not long without water.

This probably doesnt apply at this time of year, but you could try turning up the heat in the room you hope she is in. Also you could try putting the heatmat in a corner with a towel over it and pillows round it, to give her somewhere warm and safe to hide.

I have heard of owners sitting up all night in case the missing snake puts in an appearance, which may be an idea for you to try. Try putting bits of foil or crumpled wrapping paper along skirting boards cos snake will move along edge of room and hopefully you will then hear it move.

You say you have put down food....have you put it in a bottle trap? This is an example of one:
http://www.thekingsnake.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=263. Dont leave a mouse in a bottle trap for more than 24hrs...throw it away. Wait a few days and then try again.

If she was fed fairly recently, or if she takes the offered mouse but isnt in the trap, then put down some boxes like empty cereal boxes in warm place's, she'll be looking for a warm secure place to digest. You can use covered hot water bottles to offer extra warm places for her to go.

Put flour across doorways so you can see slither marks which will show the snake is around and whether it has gone into or out of a room.

Some people suggest you put sticky tape down to try and 'catch' the snake, but this can be very dangerous to them and I would seriously advise against it.

Any boxes that you have already packed prior to you moving, try and look through them in case she did get into them....

These are some examples of where people have found their snakes - in a box file of paperwork, behind books on a shelf, on a bathroom shelf, curled up in-between plugs in a 4 point adaptor and in their granddad's room in his towel basket as he got out a towel to have a shower! One forum member's OH opened the living room window, pulled the curtain cos of the sun, they heard a thud, thought it was a candle falling over, so didn't take any notice and a few minutes later the snake appeared trying to climb up the wall. Just recently a snake was found after being missing about 9 weeks, lying under the front door mat.

Hope some of this helps (and much thanks to other forum members for their tips 'borrowed').

I cant imagine being in your position Azz, to have lost your snake is bad enough but to have lost her knowing you have a limited time left in your house and when the whole house is probably crazy with getting packed up and you are under enough stress is unimaginable. Just keep looking, even where you have already looked. The main thing is not to give up hope....snakes have gone missing for days, weeks, even months and still turned up healthy and happy.

xxx

Hey guys sorry for the late reply been madly pulling apart the snakes room (7 bed house lol lots of spare space) we are quite lucky in that the snakes have their own room where the door is shut 100% of the time as it's a fire door however there a cm gap under it so n theory she may have got under it, we have relocated the snakes room to downstairs so there's now much left in there I've gone thru everything before it was taken out, lol kellog your reply was hugley helpful and I've basically followed it to the letter we've had food and water down and her favorite hides around the room still nothing tho, also loled at the idea that we are ready to pack we have no boxes yet luckily, our lease is up but we don't even have a new place lined up I'm staying till I find her :p. As of right now there are mice in hides in the floor boards the way they run in their part of the house will essentially trap her in a chamber got the torch and mirrors out Aswell lol but there's so muchpoopunder there it's hard to see what's what tho, I'm checking every hour or so as I've mentoned before JRDN (or jordan as we know him lol) lives here too and so we are both taking turns searching. I will keep you guys updated thanks for the support, lol any of you guys in swansea wanna come root about in my flooring your welcome to join the hunt btw :p

Haven't much advice to add to what Kellog says, but having been through this myself, all I can say is don't give up hope! She will no doubt show up (hopefully in the near future).

We lost our snakey for over 7 months (and had replaced him with 2 new ones) when he showed up next door, snoozing on their breadboard in the kitchen . Serves them right as they were the ones who lost him in the first place!

Nice one, my cali escaped 2 weeks before we were due to move last year, we had no choice but to leave him, the new tenants were terrified of snakes, so you can imagine the joy when they found him hissing and rattling in the sink! He was out for about 2 months, and when we got him back he had eaten recently!

That is such a relief Azz....like ReptileDanny I have been wondering how the search was going knowing that you were counting down the days til you move - although I knew you would report any news....and it is such good news !

Wasnt your OH lucky to have been going into the bathroom at just that moment before Jay had the chance to slip back to where you think she way hiding !!

But what is important is that she is safe, has eaten and can now settle back into her viv where she belongs....and you can all start to breathe again and concentrate on getting yourselves sorted for your move.

Mike - Love the thought of the new owners of your old house finding your cali in their sink !! Another forum member left their snake with neighbours while they went on holiday and it escaped. The neighbours were less than helpful when it came to searching for it....and then it turned up curled up on their breadboard! Then it was a desperate call for help to remove the snake that they wouldnt go near!

haha, so lucky you found her, it was the same for monty, when he escaped he was gone for 2 months and i had given up hope, then one day i walked out my bedoom and saw a little grey and black tail under the dog bed, i lifted the dog bed up and there he was, staring at me as if to say " oh, hey, damn, u found me" it was lucky that i found him when i did as near that there was a whole in the carpet that led under the floor boards so glad
