I just wondered with anyone who breeds, or is thinking of it, or who has done it in the past. (breathe in).
What were/are peoples preferences on incubators.
Obviously, there's the up and downside of each.

Myself, I prefer home mades, simply because they're a damn sight cheaper to get/make.

factory thermostat, downside: 30 quidish, upside: spot on accurate

RTS8 thermostat, upside: 5-10 quid, downside: + or - 3 degrees from set.

what are other peoples thoughts on this?

Just built a incubator today, to see how much it'll cost, compared to a 'normal' one.
Obviously the downside of this is that is wont be as perfectly accurate as a purpose built one, but it should suffice for the average person/batch of eggs.
Obviously if you were thinking of breeding a fair amount, then there's no doubt about it, BUY a proper one, but if, like me you were not expecting any naughty stuff going on between your snakes, then you could do this.

I got a large, 12 inch long by 10 wide by 8 high, plastic FLAT bottomed tub with a secure lid, (plastic clip things), from Inxcess for £2.95.
One heat matt, which I had spare. But a heat mat with dimensions to fit tub is about a tenner near me.
one RTS8 household electrical switching thermostat from my local 'i charge an arm and leg' plumb centre for £15.76 inc VAT.
One humidity guage from my local ironmongers, £4.95

in total it cost me: £23.66
It is possible to do it with an aquarium heater, which makes it even cheaper.

I dunno if it'll be useful to anyone, but does anyone want me to make a guide, with step by step pics?
I can do this, with prices and 'where to get parts from' info, for both the heat mat version, and the aquarium heater version.
They are near as damn it just as good, but a fraction of the cost.
I decent incubator normally sells for about 100 quid, or you can buy a 'build your own' kit from most reptile shops for about 60 quid, of I could show you haow to do it for about 25.

I would like a guide!

I'm not planning on breeding until next year, but I'm trying to get my research done now.

I'll start taking photos for the guide in a minute, it'll probably be a long post, so i may make it as a word document or something similar so it can be downloadable as well as readable on site.

I can't find my aquarium heater at the moment, but will still post instructions to use that as well.

I don't think the aquarium heater will work. They are made to work under water only and will blow if left on out of water. Hopefully you will prove me wrong but I keep fish aswell and have always been told to ensure the heater is never exposed and left on.

we have hatch burmese python with 100% success with aquarium heater incubators and they have held temps of 87f to 90f
we will be using this method again this year to incubat burmese

the heater is submerged under water in the red base at the bottam

as you can see its great for 100% humidity and the eggs were nice and dry

Hey wildee, you are correct in stating that an aquarium heater left out of water will go bang. The reason I haven't sad anything more about is is because it does have to be fully submerged, as in roselyn's pic above.
it means that the heat goes inside the incubator, as opposed to externally. Plus the water level then needs to be higher, with a 'shelf' that's raised above the water level again.
Very similar priciple to the heat mat one, but in fact a lot easier because aquarium heaters have a built in thermostat.
Although with an aquarium heater the heat sometimes needs to be a fair bit higher than 30 because it heats the water to x temp then turns off.
This is why it's always better to setup the incubators a week or so before you think you'll need them because then you can get it set up and stabilised before the eggs go in.

One of my friends lost an entire batch of ball python eggs because he waited until they had been laid before he got the incubator ready.

/edit
I have sent copies of the instructions to Lewy for him to check over.
Hopefully when they've been approved, they'll be available for either download, or in a sticky.

I did get a guide off to lewy, wasn't superb, but good enough for a budget, yet functioning incubator.

I don't know if i have the files for it on this machine, i'll have a dig about.
