Nagini is being bad again!

She's gone blue again and this will be the fourth month in a row she's shed. She's fully grown so previously only shed once every 3 months-ish, but this year she's shed on the 20th January (3 months after her previous so that's fine), 18th March, 24th April, 28th May and this week probably.

Can anyone think of a reason why?

My first thought would be mites, but I've not seen any (granted she is pure black so they would be hard to see), but she's got a white water bowl and I've never seen any dead floaters.

Answers on a postcard please

Usually shedding is due to weight gain - the old skin is too tight - so is there any reason for her to be putting weight on rapidly ?

over fed ? (not accusing you of this)
gravid ?
do they retain fat reserves for survival in the wild (might sound stupid) ?

How old/young is your snake ?

if young I would just put it down to growth. Were the parents biger than average ? If not maybe your snake will be ?

Well we rescued her so can't be too sure, but we are guessing she's 4 to 6 years old. She's always been weird, because she came from a bad place. The person who had her before was scared of her so she was neglected, but she's got better with us.

I wouldn't say she is putting on loads of weight, but she's become a more regular feeder recently. When we first got her, it was a struggle to get her feeding, but she eats every week nowadays. She's been like that for about a year now though, so don't know why it would suddenly spark a growth spurt.

She doesn't look any bigger, but maybe I should get out her past sheds to compare them. It's hard to notice changes like that when you see them everyday. Better weigh her too, It's been a while

Just got around to weighing the old bird and I wouldn't say she's grown that much to warrent so much shedding.

I last weighed her in January and she was 900g and 130cm. 6 months on and she's 1 kg and 153 cm.

I'm only saying she's not grown enough to warrent it, because that amount of growth seems average compaired to the others. The royal has gone up 100g too and Casper has gone up 50g,which I would say was about the same in ratio to his size compaired to those two.

What do you think?

They only snake I'm worrying about now is Cyd. She's gone from 500g and 109cm in January to a whopping 780g and 122cm in 6 months. She's a corn for heaven's sake! Not a monster

Think that's all the proof I need that rat pups have more fat in them than adult mice. She's staying on the Mickey's and Minnie's from now on

Is cyd (the corn snake) a female ?

Could be natural her storing additional fat for the breeding season as when they're gravid they don't eat. Even though your not breeding her she could still do this possibly ?

How old is the corn snake ? (he/she)

must be 4ft or more ?

Maybe someone could answer your question for you who may have more knowledge; Kathy Love. She breeds corn snakes in America but also other reptiles too. Try emailing her, either she or her husband should be able to get back to you.

well, we've put her getting bigger down to the breeding season, but I didn't realise exactly how much weight she'd put on until I weighed her.

She's just got big enough to breed and she has been gagging for it, because we've got males in the house.

She is 4 foot now, bless her. She's a big girl :0)
