Hi all,
Great to have found this forum, I have recently purchased two cornsnakes (male + female)
I am having problems deciding where to place my large water bowl in the vivarium, i first placed it in the cool end away from the light, then when i returned to the petshop on sunday the lady there advised me to place it under the light to create moisture, doing this steamed the front of the tank up very badly and everything became wet so i have gone back to plan a as i dont want to harm them in anyway due to excessive moisture.
any help on this would be great thankyou.

your doing the right thing by putting the water at the cool end. excessive moisture will allow bacteria to grow & multiply plus it could also cause a respitory infection in your snake. water will evapourate at room temp so as the cool end will be around that temp it will still create a certain amount of humidity, but you could also spray in the morning or evening if this is the reason for placing the water under the heat source. |

thankyou for the advice mm, we have moved the water bowl back to the cool end with no steaming probs whatsoever, there was one more thing, we have a rock in the warm end at the moment with the hide in the middle, is this the correct layout?
picture of our vivarium setup can be found on the below link

nice clean set up but the thermometer is only measuring the temp of the back wall not where your snake is hiding. try to put one thermometer at each end of where the snake occupies the viv. It's a good idea to have two hides at each end. If the snake wants to cool down at the cool end of the viv it has no where to hide to do this. same would be for the hot end. where ever you put the hides at each end measure the temps so the inside of the hide at the hot end doesn't exceed 30*C & the inside of the hide at the cool end stays around 24*C (roughly). The water dish could go in the middle as long as there are no issues with the condensation. |

you could try burrying the bowl in the substrate & even put the branch/wood over/into the water dish to allow more space for the hides at each end plus the rock. Not trying to arrange your viv for you but had a 2nd look at the pic & was working out if you had a hide at each end where everything would fit. Would look nice to have some decorative backing in there too. |

thanks mm great advice, i'll have a little play with the viv setup, im a little dubious at the minute to mess with it as the female has got milky coloured eyes and hasnt really moved since last night, im guessing she is going into shedding mode?
ive just purchased a dimming thermostat so will get that fitted asap, im hoping this is the most effective device to use with the light.. |

yeah pulse proportional is for ceramic lamps so dimming is fine for heat lights & mats. Good luck with your set up. |

ive heard that exposured heat source i.e. your heat lamp, can cause burns. might be worth while investing in a protective grill or consider placing the heat source outside pointing in. exo terra have a few options that you may be interested in |
