Hi guys, Sorry about not posting in such a long time, i've just been caught up in things, and just letting you know im still alive!
Now onto what i was actually here to say.
I went to pick up my corn earlier today when my sister was round. she was laying on the foilage with her head facing up on the glass (pressed against it). I slowly and gently opened the viv (where she was) And she curled up where she normally does, then when i saw where her head was and touched her gently to let her know i was there she shot off really quick next to the water dish (which made me jump so i pulled my hand away). I put my hand back in and went to grab her but before i touched her i heard this sound... i was like hmmmm Was looking round the cage and it stopped... Went to grab her again and i head it so i looked at her tail and it was going like 500mph honestly!! I was like... ok i heard that means there pretty p****d off so i left her to it and she went into her hide. Thinking about trying to handle her tomorrow, what do you guys think. And why do you think she done that? (The reason its putting me off its cos it made me a bit nervous of handling her incase i get bit, i dont know why i get nervous as i dislocated my knee at the age of 14 or 15 and i didnt cry (it was painful but i could bear it) and i also had to put it back into place myself as teachers cant touch you luckily it was in p.e)
Regards, Blake

Hello mate I can fully relate to what you're going through, I was nervous with mine, so worried about being bit, not about the pain as I can deal with pain, but just didn't want a snake to bite me lol. I had to force myself to do it. Mojo does the rattle snake thing now and again after a feed, he gets well grumpy, but I had to just train my brain to ignore him and just pick him up, and as soon as he realises that I am picking him regardless, he backs down. I dont know if its the same with all snakes, but mine is a big softy and tries to act tough, until I call his bluff and he calms down. He'll prolly bite me now for saying this lol
sorry for the mini essay
Stick with it matey, after all whats the worst he can do?? |

Get your woolly gloves on! young corns cant really hurt you anyway but the gloves will give you a bit of extra protection and that should help with your nervs, don't faff about they can smell fear just go calmly and dont back off. Once they have won they learn that that kind of behavior means they don't get picked up so will keep it up. |

Very true Mick,
And thanks for the quick reply. Well the bloke at the pet shop said they could come into shed soon if he is thinking of the right bunch, so that could be one of them didnt see the eyes so didnt know if they where milky.
And nope, no viv change... i'll see how she is tomorrow :) Maybe i startled her.. i dont know :) I think i need to stop being such a wuss!
Just to show how much of a wuss i am.. Im 16 and about 6ft 3" or 6ft 4" now... and a stocky fella and im scared of that =/

LOL I aint that tall but am a broad stocky bloke, and it was doin my head in being worried about holding sumit so small, when my 3yr old was not scared at all lol.
I was gonna go down the glove route, but I'm glad i didn't, I just grew bigger nutz and went for it, now theres no stopping me...
You are the boss, show no fear and pick him gently but confidently. Thier bodies seem to be very sensitive, so if you touch them gently they jump, same as if someone touched the bottom of your feet gently you would jump, but if they just placed a hand on then it wouldn't tickle and you wouldn't jump...
good luck (not that you'll need it) and keep at it. Dont let it get ya down, you WILL overcome, and be well proud of yourself ;) ........
right thats enough preaching from me, I'm off to bed... |

DW bout it Blake- the rattling they do can be pretty nerve-racking, I guess coz the first thing you think of is a rattlesnake!!
As everyone above has said, just be confident and calm, and go for it. If you get bitten it really won't be that bad, and you have already said you can deal with bad pain, so nothing to worry about! Make sure all conditions are right for your corn too and there is nothing that could be upsetting her- my corns heatmat was up to 44c the other day because of a problem with the sensor and that made her pretty mad!!!
Take a few days for the both of you to settle down a bit and then try again- if she shoots off at speed, just persist gently, and then when you do pick her up (which you will) spend a good few minutes handling her calmly and gently to show her it isnt that bad.
Don't beat yourself up about it- you'll be fine! |

Good advice all round. Make sure you have washed your hands before you handle your corn. Get them used to a clean smell its easy to forget and if you have handled food or household items it can upset them! I used to get tagged by my rat snake on odd occasions and its no where near as bad as you think it would be. Its the speed that tends to make you jump. When they strike they are pretty fast but thats about it more like getting bumped than bitten! Just keep your cool, have clean hands and scoop don't grab. Cash is a big softy (prob tag me now I've said that!) but can be flighty if I go in to quickly. They do have off days just like us! |

Lol both my snakes love being handled! A bite won't hurt, and they will only do it if really threatened! Just take a breath and pick it up!
I was kinda forced to hold mine (not that i cared), the man in the rep shop gave me about 3 at a time to choose from lmfao! |
