My wifes a filipino and we met many moons ago when I was wreck diving in Leyte. I'll never forget the first time i met my then future inlaws.
They have a house in a place called ampyon which is on the island mindanao. I guess they thought i was some crazy english guy because i would spend hours watching the geckos(tiki)running up and down the ceiling and walls of their house!
Rose's(my wife)sister had a young kitten probably a month or so old at the time, its name was ming ming and one evening as we sat watching the TV with roses parents ming ming came strolling in with a present (like cats do) for roses sister but not a mouse or a lizard or even a rat, oh no 5 baby cobras all hanging from its mouth and all very dead! I had mixed emotions about this, sad because the kitten had killed 5 beautiful but deadly snakes,happy because knowing my luck I'd have probably stepped on one and got bitten but also warey coz the chances were that mum was probably still around outside somewhere!
Another time we were sat around chatting when to large frogs came hoping in off the porch! One was completely black and the other was white! Roses mum tried shoe them out with a broom but without much luck so i tried to catch one, big big mistake. I got squirted by one of the frogs with the foulest smelling substance you can imagine and to make matters worse ended up with a nasty rash on my hand for 3 days. See said rose we always use a broom!
One of the funniest things that happened was when I was taking a shower. The power supply in the phils is at best erratic and brown outs are common as are blackouts. I was in the shower when a blackout ocured, now the shower room had no window so it was completely dark. No probs I thought, just carry on till the lights come back on. Wait a second whats that on my foot? Just as i started to get a bit freaked the lights came back on and their I was sharing my shower with 4 of the biggest cockroaches I have ever seen.Pacific tropical roaches are probably one of the biggest types and these were a good 5 inches long but what was even more amazing as this was happening a large leopard gecko(takok)had appeared from nowhere and ate 2 of the roaches before they scuttled off into the cracks!Imagine what bath time must be like. All good fun and part of the charm
of rural mindanao and I can't wait for my next visit..  |

thast so cool :) and interesteing to hear that these animals do actually live wild :D

I hope you guys didn't mind me sharing my story. I have another to post at a later date if its ok with the moderators with a link to some of the wild life in Mindanao. I know its not corn snakes but its got snakes,lizards and huge creepy crawlies in it which is all good fun.
