Hey guys - I've been bored lately and have decided to follow Dazb's viv guide in the DIY section and make myself a nice little 2ft viv. My question is; is toughened glass required? I got a quote for £21 with toughed, or £12 for not.. So oviously it's £9 more expensive..
Wood = £16 Runners/Vents/door handles = £10ish Glass = £12 Glue = £2
Total = £40
So how dazb got it for under £30 is beyond me! Any tips anyone? |

There are only 2 problems with perspex, it bows if the sheets are too big (2ft viv wont be a problem), and it scratches if your using a viv lock. Because of this I would only use it for vivs smaller than 3ft. (yes, if I could build mine again i would use glass.) |

Yeah, I think i'd prefer to use glass - And this cost includes having smoothed edges ^^ (+ being cut to size) I'm not even planning on putting anything in it tbh.. Just putting it together and maybe selling it for as much as I paid to make it. Just something to try really :D

Actually I think I'm gonna push the boat out and get glass. If I'm gonna do it, might as well do it right 1st time round. £30 for the bits I need cut, with polished edges, but hey... he's worth it |

Most glue is fine as long as its left to dry and air. |

normal glass is fine unless your worried about kiddies falling against it or if you have a snake powerful enough to break it |

I went for the toghened glass option. I think I payed about £30 for the 2 pieces I have in my 3ft viv.
Only a small extra expense really, for peace of mind! |

Alright; just got back with all the wood cut. But, will wood glue support it enough? It's a 2ft viv, exactly the same dazb has in the DIY section ;p Wood, glue & edging = £21
Let's see it add up slowly! :( |

I think you will need to either screw it, dowel it or use those lil white corner blocks unless you have a very very good glue, clamps etc... Wood glue soaks into the wood to get a hold, if you glue to a melamine surface it would not be strong enough using wood glue imo
I shall be either dowelling or screwing for mine

No More Nails should be more than adequate. I find B&Qs own-brand glue isn't as strong. |

Contact Adhesive is very strong I dont think no more nails would work. Its meant for holding dados on etc It would prolly stick 2 bare surfaces of the chipboard under the melamine together, but dont think it would stick to melamine, I could be wrong, but I have worked with many woods and glues and I dont think it would work. Just my opinion of course |
