Hello everyone, apologies for not having been on here more often but my home computer is bust, and so is my snake by the looks of things... Slinky has got the sneezes and also make a popping sound. I am sure he is doing it more than he used to and yesterday he sneezed 4 times in half an hour and when i held him up he looked like he was taking occasional big breaths. I have kept his tank nice and clean and he has all the required heating, although he will only go on the hot side for 24 hours after he has eaten and spends the rest of the time on the cold side. There are no reptile vets anywhere near my house and I work Saturdays so i am quite worried. I have read that i should try and keep him nice and warm and even that vicks vapo rub helps. He has just shead his skin a couple of days ago. Any help or advice would be great.
Thanks guys! |

Unfortunately it does sound like an RI - Especially if you're saying he seems to be taking big breaths. A vet trip will be necessary if it's in its later stages (Which it seems to tbh..) Try to increase the temperature, and get in contact with your local vet.
The longer you leave it, the worse it will get.. Is there any mucus around his mouth btw? |

Take it to a vet, it probably needs antibiotics. Sounds like the start of a respiratory infection. |

sorry, he looks fine other than that, and I only noticed his deep breathing last night. I have just been told that the consultation charge is going to be £50, so I hate to say it but he better be ill. I'm guessing this isnt something i can deal with myself? |

initially increase his temps, remove his cold hide so he can't use it, and add a damp hide to the warm end. raising his temps will bring a mild RI 'to a head' taking out his cold hide means he has to use the warm end, it's likely he spends most of his time in the cold end to stop the symptoms developing as quickly. adding a damp hide healps keep any mucous more watery so he can expel or re-absorb it. are you able to get hold of any F10 disinfectant? |

£50 for a consultation???? Where do you take him to?
We went to the reptile vets last week and it was £27 (and I thought that was expensive). Best to try looking around for another vet in the area. |

Haha, well i am now £87 worse off. My local vet only has one person who specialises in reptiles and he went on holiday yesterday! It was pretty steap and I have a huge bag full of syringes that i have to inject him with for the next two weeks... I have told him if he gets ill again its handbag time for him! He did seem really wheezy last night though so at least i know i have done my best by him... Also i think i need to move him as it is possibly a little drafty where i have him at the moment.
I have got some specialy vetinary disinfectant (is that similar to F10) that I cleaned the whole tank out with including all his branches and fake leaves. It was my first clean since I got him from the previous owner so I made it a thorough one.
Does anyone know of any good (and cheaper) vets in London, preferably South West (I live in Tooting)?
Anyway, i just wanted to thank you all for your help, I know that you would point me in the right direction.
I'm off to get me some pet insurance! :-) |

my snake has the occassional wheeze now and then but hes been like it for 6 months so definatley not a respiratory infection, hes behaviour is aboloutley fine and i always examine his mouth for mucus, by what i have heard mucus is a definite RI. but stay positive, in any doubt contact ur local reptile vet |

Thanks guys,
He is fine now, although he has a 2 week course of antibiotics thatI have to inject into him every three days. As my boyfriend wont be in the same room its quite a difficult task and I feel so bad hurting him. I thikn he actually quite enjoyed the celebrity of coming to work with me and going on the train home, there were hordes of epople trying to get a look.
I just wanted to thank you for your help gingerpony :-) and everyone else that made suggestions |

i do knwo that mucus doesnt always mean RI.
My old science teacher was a snake fanatic, used to take in confiscated imports etc. Anyway, he bought in his beautiful alino burmese to schoo lone day, and when she got scared she used to expel muscus of her nose. Might jsut be burmese, but it's a sort of defensive thing, and it sued to ABSOLOUTLY reek!
