ok i have bin thinking about this i think it's because Baby Cornsnakes in the wild are on every predator's list of favorite snack foods, so they have to be cautious in big open space's
it just my thought on this maybe im right maybe im wrong.
My snake seems fine in her viv, which is really quite big for her size, and her preferred hide is one that's much bigger than she needs to just fit into. I appear to have a fearless little chap on my hands :)

my baby corn snake was striking at me in a 5 gallon tank and i moved him to a 20 gallon and he has never done it again so mine likes the bigger space but maybe he is werid just like me :):)
I think small snakes would be fine in a large viv, provided they have adequate cover and plenty of hiding places. Then they can feel secure and they'll venture from there hiding place when they feel it's safe.
If you put a baby snake in a 3' long viv with nothing but a hide each end and a water dish it's bound to get stressed.
