Hi all im a newby this is my first post as i have a prob, basically i have bought myself a corn snake "anerythristic" im pretty sure its a female.... "sybil" lol, she is 7 months old, anyway when i bought sybil i spoiled her buying a 2ft squared viv "thinking i wold give her plenty of room" in the viv she has several places to hide with her own enclosed rock with moss inside, all reptile specialist items. i have a heat mat tapped to one side of the viv which i turn on at night, in the daylight hours i just have a normal house bulb and the temp nxt to the bulb is 34f, i knmow she had eaten 3 days before i bropught her home and i expected her to be stressed so left her alone for 4 days not handling her etc, then i thought would try and feed her so i got a pinky placed it in warmish water etc put it in the viv watched for an hour..nothing so i took it out then handled er a little left her 2 more days tried her with pinky again nope she wont eat them i have tried to wiggle it infront of her face hoping she would strike get a taste etc, nope she just went back in her rock, few days later she was in my hand and i noticed that her eyes was glazed " THATS IT SHE SHEDDING HER SKIN" i felt better knowing that i knew she wasnt eating because of this so ileft her alone for few days checked on her and she had shed perfect no probs there so i treid her with a pinky again and nope doesnt want it. anyway its coming upto 7 weeks and she still hasnt eaten, now im beggining to worry, what am i doing wrong ?????? thanx ps i wil try and upload some pics soon

Hullo. Okay, for starters, the heat mat needs to be underneath the vivarium, you are not wanting to heat the air temp, but the substrate the snake will be on. Make sure the mat is on the outside of the vivarium and covers 1/3 of the floor surface. Do you have a thermostat fitted? If she is too hot it could be putting her off eating. In my opinion, I would choose one form of heating either the bulb or the mat, but you definetely need a thermostat to regulate it.

Another thing to note, is even if you think youre spoiling her with all the room, your snake still may feel very insecure in such a large vivarium which can put them off food also. The shedding could well be the first reason she refused to eat, but the heat factor may also be another reason it's extending the fasting. Maybe try putting a divide inside it to half the size.

If she is as spoilt as you say then you either have some vine or are willing to buy some, they look cool so its not a waste of money. Put vines about 10inches high stringing from side to side in the vivarium effectivly creating a new roof, making her vivarium seem like a 2foot by 2foot by 10inch. She will feel a lot more secure if shes in a smaller space, you've got to think of corn snakes as agrophobic(opposit to clostraphobics) so they don't enjoy lots of space to "stretch their legs"

As mentioned above make sure you are regulating the temp's with a thermostat, otherwise your mat will just keep getting hotter & hotter & eventualy it WILL cook your snake.

If after you shrink her home, regulate the temps & let her get used to it for a while, she still won't eat then place her in a paper back with a pinkie thawed in warm water & its head dipped in hot water for about 10 seconds, Fold over the top of the paper back, & staple or paper clip it shut. Leave the bag half on the heat mat for a couple of hours - over night & she should have eaten it... Instead of opening the bag i find it easier to hold it up to the light & have a look in the bottom to see if you can still see the pinkie.

Hope this helps Brayboy, good luck.

Hi

First thing is she might have too much room to feel secure, how long is the snake? Also, a heat mat taped to the side wont produce any heat that she can use, is it on the outside or inside? Either way it should be inside on the bottom.

Have you got a thermostat for the bulb? Is it guarded so the snake cant touch it? You will need both to stop the snake seriously burning itself. 34*C is too hot, if you have a stat turn it down. How are you measuring the temperature on each end?

hi

thanx for all your replies, i thought that corns needed heat source 24/7, clearly i have alot to learn ! first off i am going to divide the viv making it smaller i take it thats why she stays in her rock all the time? What is vine ?

she is 18 inches long,

going to get a thermostat sorted soon as, but which is the best to choose bulb or mat ?? thanx for the paper tip thats an awesome idea. i am measuring the heat with a stick on temp gauge each end of the viv.

yeah the bulb has a guard

i will try all of your ideas and get back to you thanx again

You do need a heat source 24/7, I dont think anyone said otherwise?

I would turn the bulb off and heat the viv with the mat. Take the mat off and tape it under the viv on the outside covering one third of the floor space. Put some folded up paper or something under each corver of the viv to allow airflow to the bottom of the mat.

You will need a dimming stat for the light and a mat stat for the mat. To be honest I would ditch the bulb and just use the mat with a mat stat.

Pictures of you set up would help.

in a nutshell: viv is too large, food item is probably too small, heatmat needs to be on the viv floor and on 24/7 running through a thermostat.

a corn that old should be in a rub to be honest about the size of a shoe box with 2 hides a water bowl and the rub placed ontop of the heat mat covering 1/3rd of the base with a base temp no higher than 30c (mine r all at 28c and r doing fine) and let the cool end do its own thing im sure she will spend most of her time in the warm end give her a few days and im sure she will then feed hope that helps
