buyin one is your best option if you have the money to and any decent rep shop should get you one. on making you own its quite simple. you need a polystyrene box like fish come in to pet shops (i asked a pet shop if i could buy one off them and they gave it me for free). the rest of the stuff is a heat mat thermostat and other appliances you have in viv. about the assembly however best off waitin for GP or someone as i have been told so much about it and am only new this yr anyway

Hi bristow1979, I made an incubator recently - much cheaper than buying.

You need a polysterene box (aquatic pet shop should have one that you can beg - they get aquariums in them)

You also need a thermostat and digital thermometer - ebay or reptile shop

And a heat mat

I filled the bottom with sand which I keep really wet, attached the heat mat to the wall of the box and put my eggs in a bowl of vermiculat (kept damp).

Put sensors for thermostat and digital thermometer next to eggs and cover eggs with slightly damp moss.

I also keep a spray bottle of water in the incubator so that I can boost the humidity without dropping the temp.

9 weeks later your eggs should be cooked to perfection!!!

Hope this helps

So i do stick the stat sensor in the vermiculite then?

spaggy moss on top of the eggs and wet playsand over the heat mat/ under the tub?

One more question - do i need to put a lid on the plastic tub or not?

Gutted that the last clutch went black, smelly and mouldy and want to make sure i get it 100% right this time.

I never put a lid on my tub with the eggs in, but obviously a lid on the poly box or you loose your heat/moisture.

the rest seems right though - I put my sensor on top of the eggs under the moss, but I dont see why it should'nt be in the vermiculate.

just make sure that its up and running at temp/humidity before you put the eggs in.

Good luck.

Cheers Paul, off to the local fish shop tomorrow they gave us a couple of big polyboxes when we moved house a few years back. Hopfully they'll do the same again, although they're now selling rep stuff so might have to pay fot it this time.

I had a lid on my egg container last time, think thats where i may have gone wrong, had holes but maybe not enough ventalation?

I too use a poly box home made jobby, but my heat mat is on the lid which eliminates any condensation from forming at the top and dripping down.

If you choose to make your own, get hold of a pulse thermostat, they keep a much steadier temperature than a mat stat (mine has fluctuated 0.1 deg C over a week)
