I need some advise please. I have found a Royal Python for sale on preloved. The snake is 3 yrs old and a female and comes complete with viv and set-up and is very reasonably priced. The problem is the snake only eats live mice, which i believe to be illegal in this country, apparently its owner as tried ever trick to get it to eat pre-killed but the snake once went 4 months without eating until a live mice was offered, which it ate immediately. The snakes owner only feeds it once a month.
Do i get it and try to change its feeding habits or leave it where it, in my opinion, is being underfed.
HELP.

sounds like it is being under fed - you would be doing it a favour by taking it on, royals are notorious bad eaters - I find ours won't eat unless the mouse is warm - we just heat it in the micro for 8 second on medium heat, although she can still be funny sometimes.

I have heard of people getting royals that'll only feed live and weening them off live food by feeding a thawed mouse straight after a live one.

But you may have to be prepared to feed live for a while until you have sucessfully moved her onto thawed.
It's up to you, do you think you could do it?

I am pretty sure it's not illegal, but it's definately unadvisable.
Only because a mouse could do a lot of damage to your snake if it got stressed, and quite frankly, it's going to be stressed isn't it

Just as long as you don't leave the snake and the mouse unattended then it should be ok.
I once saw an awful picture on another site about the damage a mouse can do to a snake. I'll have a look if your interested, but it's not nice.

i`ve seen some clips on youtube with snakes eating live mice and your right Kaz its not nice at all, but its better than starving a snake. If i get the snake i`ll obviously try to wean it onto prekilled and try what Lewy suggested and any other tricks that i can find. I`ll let you know how it goes.

I just want to say though Jonb- don't let this picture put you off your Royal. This picture show the extreme of what can happen but it's all due to neglect. If you are forced to feed that Royal live until you've weened it onto frozen, then just make sure you don't leave them unattended together.

You need to supervise the feeding so that if things do take a turn to the worse for your snake you can take action.

It is possible to ween a Royal onto frozen, so the previous owner probably just couldn't be bothered.

I hope you do get it, because it does sound like it's being underfed. Good Luck!!!!
