Hello everybody, i'm very much a cornsnake noob , howevery i am a new owner of a "normal" morph juvenile corn. i have decided to call it Arnie. i say it because i dont know if its a boy or a girl.
i have had arnie a week today, and (s)he has already shed this week, and now i have just given my first feed. after reading all your excellent advice in the forums i bought a seperate container and fed arnie in that, it was less than 5 seconds before arnie went and struck the pinkie, i was quite impressed how fast he went for it. did i leave it too long ,7 days, before feeding him after getting him home? i did read that you should leave him a few days to settle in before feeding.
took him about 120 seconds to get it downand then (s)he was off on the prowel again. you can watch hundreds of nature programms on tv but that first feed was awsome, its amazing how these snakes can swallow something as big as themselves!
a couple of questions how long should you leave a corn snake before trying to introduce him back to his viv after feeding? and secondly until only yesterday i thought the shed was a clean one, but noticed that the tip had stayed on. i did the damp towel trick on arnie and that got the majority off, except for the very tip so i decided to order some Zoo Med Reptile Shedding Aid off the internet however it didnt turn up this morning. my concern is now is - is it going to be safe for this last bit of skin on the tip of the tail until i can next handle him, 2 days after feed, hopefully i should have the shedding aid by then?
although i havent posted before, just want to say thanks for all he adviced offered on this site, i was reading this site everyday for a month before i decided to go for a snake.
speak soon

Hello Gunny, welcome to the mad house.
Might be worth trying to rub the skin off with a damp cloth again or even a bath tomorrow, 2 of my corns have lost the tips of their tails from bad sheds (before i had them) it's a really commen with corns. I'm sure somebody else will be along soon but personally i think the risk to Arnies tail is higher than the risk of regurge from handleing a bit soon after a feed. As i said thats just my view - the great thing about this site is someone else will be along soon so you can get a few bits of advice before you decide what to do. |

Welcome here.
the tip of his tail with the dodgy shed will be okay for a short while, it's when it happens a lot and nothing is done about it that can cause the problems.
As for how long to leave after feeding before putting back in the viv, I sometimes put them in 5 mins afterwards, or 20 mins. It's a judgement on how cold they're gonna get that I use. |

Hi & welcome gunny.. , hope all goes well with the unshed tail end. As for putting the snake back after a feed, i usually wait til the food is half way down and they start to wonder.. |

heya and welcome
after feeding i let mine have 5-10 mins in the feeding tub to let them move the mouse down into their stomach and to come out of 'feeding mode' then transfer them back to their viv, either by pickeing them up or gently tipping them back in. |
