I rescued, yes, some nasty person had dump this snake outside,a 3 to 4ft snow corn snake.I have a fear of snake's but have decided this is a good chance to get over it.anyway after taking some advice from my locale reptile shop i got the correct bark substate and some mice.I have fed the snake but did not know about it swallowing the substate, i will add that this was 1 or 2 small piece's but i am now worried this could be a problem. The snake seems fine but i have not handled it yet as it is too soon after feeding.it seems to be spending most of it's time hiding.I don't mean to go on too much but better to give too much info than not enough.Could someone please advise.thanks Brian. my first snake ever.

heya and welcome
and congrats on the rescue, corns are great starter snakes for getting your confidence, and i'd rather handle a 3-4ft corn than a fast fiddly little hatchling.

what sort of bark are you using? and are you sure the snake definitely swallowed the substrate as it's usually brushed off by the lips as it's going down. small (in relation to the snake) pieces hopefully shouldn't be too much of an issue but can cause impactions within the gut so best to keep an eye on him till he poos again.

it sounds like orchid bark, check out the substrate sticky thread there's some pics on there to help you identify it.

lumps of that stuff are quite unlikely to be digestable, i'd monitor him closely, if the lump from his meal doesn't do down in around 48 hours after feeding then he could be blocked, meaning a trip to a specialist exotics/rep vet. this is more of the worse case scenario, hopefully he'll be able to pass any pieces swallowed without any issues.

I would sayit is orchid but not as big or flaky as one shown.I only saw the lump as it was going down but tommorow will handle it for the first time and i will then beable to see better.which is my other prob it has not come out off it's hollow log since feeding ,i can see it, it does move but how do i get it out to handle it.can i tip it out or will that upset it.

Congrats on the rescue and as Gingerpony says, the larger corns are easier to handle, the smaller ones are cuter.

Snake will come out eventually, but still best to leave him be for about 48hrs after feeding though.
A good way to get him out is to open the viv, and move a few bits around in his tank then leave the viv door open.
He'll soon come out to have a nose about at what you were doing in the viv, then he'll start making his way out the viv shortly afterwards hopefully. Most corns do.
