hi guys, just got a new viv and was curious if one heat mat is enough. viv is 90x18x18. just checking cos i was told you need to cover 1/3 of the base. also im nervous about it being to big for chester. he is 8-9 months old and about 2 foot long. it just seems that his rub is to small. also is there any must haves for the habitat or tips before i go shopping on friday. all help and advice is really appreciated. thanks.
Can you fit his old viv in the new one? Id maybe leave the one he's in at the moment in the new viv with the lid open the he can roam around his new "crib" to get used to it but still keel safe in the environment he's used to.
Hope u understood all that, took me a while to get it down on here, lol
You could also fill it with loads of stuff before you put him in it so it doesn't seem so big.
Think free things like rocks from the garden you can disinfect and wood you can strip, bake in oven and disinfect before it goes in. Even a box with an hole in it will keep him entertained. Or a few toilet roll middles
coolio..ty. the other thing is the heat mat, i currently have a 11"x11" 12 watt heat mat. is this enough to heat my viv or do i need a more substantial one. cant see any guide lines anywhere????
Ideally the heatmat should be a third of the size of the viv base and certainly no larger than half the base length. This ensures a good temperature gradient so the snake can thermoregulate.
I no this may seem a bit stupid lol But does the heatmat go inside the wooden viv as i have seen vids on youtube were they put them underneath and some inside the viv
Heat mats for wooden vivs generally are advised to go inside the viv as heat does not radiate well through wood. You will need to make sure the snake can not crawl underneath it when burrowing and also ensure it is well covered so it will not burn lying on it. I have read a piece of slate or perspex is good to cover. My vivs are glass so others will be better advising you about heat mats and wooden vivs.
