im a spider guy and keep many but i know snakes are totaly diffrent, i dont know much about snakes but know a bit about reptiles in genreal
im getting a amel corn 11" male and wish to clear up a few qestions
what i want to know is whats best to use as its bedding/substrate. from as much as i could read and fit in my brain!! i know aspen is very good but can get messy quickly, but has good propertys as the snake can make a hide/burrow or do i use bark chippings
or maybe a combination?
then my next qestion is apart from the substrate what other bedding do i need, a few sources sugest moss or is this strictly for shedding if the eye caps or tail become stuck?
many thanks and tho the picture is blury heres what ill be buying

Hi and welcome to the forum Many people use aspen, I would recomend it. As for moss, corns shed quite well so I wouldnt use it unless your snake has had a poor shed.

so would there be any harm in providing bark chipings for say 1/3 of the tank i have a very nice 3" thick 16-17" long branch that was used for my lizard, ive also got a water bowl. heat mat, not sure if a thermo stat is of much use as its maxumim temp with the mat is 75/77f by day and 58/60 by night
what other genreal infomation is strictly linked to corns or is what i can read via the net as much as ill need to know?
many thanks for the advice

I use a mix of bark chippings and aspen, gives them some variation ^^ |

You can use more than 1 type of substrate to mix it up a bit if you like. The branch will be fine aslong as its well cleaned.
You must run a thermostat with a mat, they can be faulty and if not shut off by a stat, can fataly burn a snake. |

heya and welcome regarding substrate, the only thing about using bark chippings is the excess moisture resulting in too much humidity. this could leave your snake prone to disease and infections as their natural environment is drier. baking the bark for an hour in the oven at 100+ *C is a pain in the butt but it gets rid of the excess moisture. beech chippings, aspen, hemp or paper are much easier to use for this very reason. |
