I am not sure if they are more popular or its just that I am more aware of them now I have snakes. Fashionable they may be, but I am still considred freaky at work for having snakes as pets!

I dont no.
I have basically NO reptile shops around my area. My m8s think snakes as pets are freaky as they are not normal as they say. A snake is the best pet i could ever ask for

i`ve noticed a few more places than when i first started, i only hope that there are some restrictions stopping anyone opening up a reptile shop so nothing can be mistreated.

Hey Jonb, I'm not sure if there are restrictions or not, if there are, then they're not monitored very well.

There was one in Ringwood, about 10 miles from me, and that was VERY poor.
The owner had animals that legally she shouldn't have had, and they were badly looked after.
I have to confess, this was where i got my Vermi from, and I was also one of the people that reported her.
The whole place was awful, a few of my friends had also brazenly gone in there, and took any of the livestock that they could get, even if they were in locked displays.
Some people should get the same treatment as the animals they are in possesion of.
She had a SINGLE meercat in a 2 1/2 foot glass tank, and was insistent that ALL non-native animals needed to be kept at a temperature of at LEAST 30 degrees.
It used to be owned ny an old boy named Ted, and was superb then. I first noticed how bad it was when i went in shortly after she took over, for a heat mat and i asked specifically for a 18x12 inch one, when she asked what size tank it was for, i told her it was for a 4x1 foot snake tank, she said it HAD to be the entire size of the bottom of the tank and didn't need a thermostat, as they got up to the correct heat, and stayed at the correct temp.
I've often wondered since then, how many people have either killed or seriously injured their snakes etc because of poor advice from this shop.

Apologies for rant, but this place really got my back up, and does everytime i think about it.

Sadly this is not the first time I have heard such stories. What is most annoying is that they get even the most basic care issues wrong and pass on false info to new owners, yet it hardly takes long to read and learn about basic snake management. When its their livlihood you would think they would make an effort.

I think they are more popular. I work in a school and nearly all the kids have snakes, geckos or beardies now. Occassionaly we get a kid with a good old hamster, but not very often

Don't know wether it's a good thing though. A lot of them have told me stuff about how they care for their reps and it's annoying. I make them take a book out if they are really bad, but in most cases it's the parents who need to be told about their bad practices and I've no access to them

I did that! I was going to Sheffield for my rep stuff, which is about 20 minutes away, then I found out there is a shop in the next village.

They are popping up everywhere

I think corns are getting cheaper so more people can afford to buy a snake - but not necessarily all the right equipment to go with it though. There's a place in Leeds with plenty (prob 50+) snakes from yearlings to 3 years old that you can buy for less than £40 each

Snakes n adders down Kirstall Road, someone's already put a clicky link in a thread called 'shop recommendations', think it's in the herp equipment part of the forum. I've not been there but I'm planning a trip in the next week or so

Finally got to Snake's n Adders last Saturday... and came home with a Carolina yearling!
The stock on their website is severely out of date but friendly little shop, helpful staff with good parking opposite at McDonalds, lol
