Hi I'm Euan

I live with my girlfriend and my (nearly) 4 year old son. We also live with a dog (beagle named Toby), Budgie (named Barry), and 2 fish who's names rotate(depending on what my son feels like calling them on the day) the 2 names are ..... nemo and bubbles.(He loved finding Nemo for a while)

I have always wanted to own a snake and I think I can learn alot from this forum. I never got round to getting my first snake then my family poped up and before I knew it the snakes out the window and the dogs in the door.

My girlfriends mother owned a snake when she was young and although nothing adverse happened she's proving hard to convince that this would be a good move. We are also looking to have another child.

I would be interested to hear from other people that have been in a similar situation ( Are kids good with snakes? or vice versa?!!!) any suggestions/experiences would be superfantastic.

I have no idea what I'm doing, and no-one seems to have noticed.

Hiya efbrodie.

I have never had a problem with kids and snakes, or vice versa.
Although sometimes children can be a bit rough, with proper supervision and care, the kids will learn to be gentle as well.

My male, Kelloggs, (white one in my sig) is about 5ft long, and my 4 year old grand-daughter LOVES him.
It's superb watching a child laugh when a snake nearly twice her height is 'tickling her neck', especially when she show mummy, who isn't keen on them. .

Hello Euan and welcome .

We have 5 kids ranging in age from 17 to 2. They love the reptiles and the reptiles are fine with them. They only handle my Royal and the OH's Leopard Geckos because my corn has a bit of an anger management issue at the moment. She was a rescue and, judging by the other corns on here, her temperament is not the norm for a corn snake. The kids always wash their hands with anti-bac before and after handling as you would with any pet.

My wife was very anti about reptiles to start with but after a while she got the bug too. Even my 6 year old son wants a beardie now and keeps watching Kehhlyr's ones on the webcam.

The only warning I would give is that reptiles are addictive. One will soon turn into many, many more .

EDIT: Typo

More of the same really i have a right housefull, 6 corns, 1 milk snake, 2 dwarf boas, 2 leos 2 beardies and a plated lizard (yes he/shes new).

I also have kids ages 3, 4 and 8 and they adore the reps, supervision and hand-washing are really important but i think the kids really learn from them too. The corns also really chill out my 4 year old son (who can be abit chicken oriental) He's super gentle with them (now if only he could do that with his sisters). We have a constant stream of school friends and neighbours kids coming round to see/hold/touch the scaly crew too and have never has a problem. Corns are a great starter reptile, cheep to keep once you have the set up sorted and not overly time demanding either, reps are abit addictive though.

We have 2 kids, ages 6 and 9 and they both ignore my snake. They have little to no interest in animals of any kind really despite the amount I/we have! and when they do show any interest it's for very brief fleeting moments. I think it's a good idea to introduce kids to different animals early on. It may prevent any silly fears that some adults have now. For example our landlord is petrified of snakes as is my mother, if they'd have been brought up with them then I think it would be a different story.

Perhaps if you ask your other half what she's worried about then we can address those issues here. It's hard to argue your point when you don't have much knowledge yet.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Corns are great with kids, they dont stress out easily and are reluctant to bite.

heya and welcome
my 2 year old daughter loves the snakes, she knows them all by name and which viv they live in. the cats sometimes pat the glass viv doors but the corns very quickly learned to ignore them. the dog isn't an issue as he stays downstairs and the vivs are all upstairs.
2 things i'd advise are strict hand-washing before handling the snake and secure locks on the viv doors. other than that they're great pets, the only ones i'm not allergic to too!

cornsnakes, ratsnakes, bullsnakes, boas and day geckos

Ned to change profile, i've gotten older since i put that on, i'm 29 now. As if that make a difference.

The child is my step-grandaughter actually, but it's extra words to add on, plus i've been 'grandad' since she (and her older brother) were born.

Lets attempt to describe my family shall I??

I have 3 biological children, 11, 8 and 5.
My missus has 3 also: 24, 22 and 15.

The 22 year old has 3 children (No TV??), with number 4 due in May.
The 24 year old is due to become a dad in May as well.

So, at 29, i have 3 children, 3 step-children, 3 step-grandchildren with 2 more due soon.

Needless to say, i don't particularly like Christmas.
