hi there, i'm looking for any advice for a corn snake i've been given. the corn snake is about 2 - 3 years old and has never been handled, it has always been fed in the vivarium so now whenever i put my hand in the viv, even if i'm not puttin my hand anywhere near the snake, the snake goes into "hunting mode" i have tried to handle the snake but it just goes crazy at the slightest touch. any advice on how to calm the snake down and comfortable with being handled would be much appreciated.
Thanks |

The only thing i can suggest to start with, is putting a t-shirt or something similar that you've worn into the viv to get her/him used to your smell. If you can put it in or near her fave hiding place, then she'll start associating that with settling hopefully.
Nice thick gloves and thick sleeves on a jumper as well to start with getting her out, because then if she does bite, you don't feel it. Check out PaulusWorm in this pic: |

I put a shirt in my Slim's tank for a while and he seemed to get better after that. But there is no substitute for regular handling as far as I'm concerned. |

i seem to be posting this a lot but here goes.... if he's a bit 'viv-defensive', you could try just opening the viv door and letting him be nosey enough to come out and explore, then supporting his weight while he comes out, until you're holding him. it might take numerous attempt to get him interested enough to make the first move. once out they often settle down but still keep the handling session short - 5-10 mins. |

If it makes you feel any better our anery had never been handled when we got her and was picked up with a bamboo cane to be put in her feeding tub. Nice i know.
She is now tgreat for handling and headbuts the glass when she wants to come out to play. All we did was build it up slowly and always put her back when she got a bit stressy. It took about 3 months before she stopped getting moody and she's still not like the snow who just goes to sleep round your neck but she's calm enough for the kids to hold. |

I've never had any problem with snakes around the neck, until yesterday.
My mate had hold of my 2 cereal snakes, and Kelloggs was holding on round his neck nicely, unfortunately this put him into a sleeper hold without any of us realising.
He said the snake wasn't holding him tightly, but it was just holding on round his neck in the right place to knock him out. Luckily he was sat on the sofa and he was only out for about a minute. He said he's gonna be a bit more careful now though. |

It was more a 'WTF', then panic. And now i'm still laughing about it. Bit annoyed I didn't think of drawing a 'tache on him as well though. |

You always get the best idea too late dont ya?
I will keep it in mind but to be honest she'll probably still be round my neck tonight, it's usually while i'm doing the washing up. She just hangs out necklace style then goes to sleep in my hood or the big pocket on the front of my hoodie. The hood is a bit of a pain in the **** if i'm home alone |

That's funny as hell, it's weird he didn't realise until he was asleep lol. |

It's ok if it's a zip up hoodie but pull over type is a right pain in the bum |

It's odd actully Mulv. Have you ever been put or put anyone into the 'sleeper' grip? It's weird because you don't realise until it's to late. And then if it's someone else you never have a marker pen handy either. |

I know this is gonna make me sound thick here, but what exactly do you mean by a sleeper grip? I mean, I know I won't have to worry about it for a while since my snakes only 6 months old, but if its something I should keep in mind... |

Its when you wrap your arm around someones neck from behind and put pressure on the sides of the neck. Dont do it
The snake did it by accident and wouldnt of known what it was doing, so dont worry about it at all Janos. |
