From a guy who lives near me to trade Tartan for 4 female hypo leos and a male leusistic what on earth does the hypo and the leusistic mean? I know it's about colour/breed etc, but what colours oes in entail?
I've said yes of course :D
What size viv would I need to keep 5 leos in? And what time of year do they breed, how many eggs would I be getting, is it cruel to just take the eggs out and not let them hatch, what do you need to be able to let them hatch, etc etc
Wasn't planning on getting breeded leosm so I didn't reseatch!!!
sorry this is so long guys
thanks1 |

4ft x 2ft x 2ft Should hold 5 alright. It is a huge risk with the males, but plenty of food and females should remove a percentage of the risk.
I wouldn't go so far as keeping a BD and Leo as Leos don't need UVB and need different heating arrangments. If they breed, you will need to then remove the male and incubate the eggs.
Or, simple thing: Build a Rack? Use some RUBs |

dont put a leo and a beardie together. It will only go wrong. Like JS said a cheap rub will house a single leo nicely. |

i keep my male seperate but ive been told that if you have 3+ females to one male it is ok.
just make sure they are all at least 35g before you house them all together or the females can get egg bound. they normally have 0 eggs in its first year then 8,12,16,14,10 each year. breeding season normally starts about febuary but most will breed all year round.
dont house the leo and beardie together. they require totally different housing conditions. plus they wouldnt get on i dont think.

hmm. maybe if i just put a seperator in the viv that has the leos in the keep the male and female seperate, then I wont have to worry. but I dunno. I really want the male. But i don't reall wanna worry about breeding too much. and the guy says he's his best stud, and all the females have or will breed. aghhhh i dunno what to do!!!! |

You could just pop them in the fridge so they definitely die or feed them to something else in your collection then you wouldn't be wasting them.
Its not animal cruelty to remove eggs - you have to do it to incubate them anyway! |

It is to freeze them or dispose of them in such a way. |

At the risk of creating a huge debate, why?
We put chicken eggs in the fridge every day... Its certainly not animal cruelty to feed them to another animal if you have one that'll eat eggs.
How do you feed your snake Josh-sama? Could it be frozen mice? |

Those eggs haven't got babies in.
The mice are killed humanely, and it's nature for snakes to eat mice. We don't feed them live?

Actually some chicken (and duck) eggs are fertile and will hatch if you incubate them, but the percentage is relatively low.
Keeping a gecko egg in a low temperature environment to prevent it developing into a baby gecko is humane in my opinion. Its not like there is a fully formed baby gecko in there or else there would be no need for the egg, would there?
The mice are killed by being flash frozen or gassed as far as I am aware.. personally I think thats worse, partially because they are considerably more developed than a freshly laid egg which is mostly made up of blood vessels and yolk. Not a nervous system or bone structure like in a baby mouse. In addition, adult snakes are eating adult mice that have been killed in the same way as babies, so it doesn't get any better.
Its also nature for many species of snakes and lizards (as well as everything else) to eat eggs, as many of them are omniverous or at least opportunistic enough to know a container full of protein when they smell it. At least as food those eggs wouldn't be wasted. Not everyone has the time or inclination to hatch and care for all the eggs their reptile might have, and although I think that if this is the case they shouldn't be breeding them, it can be a useful source of food for other animals you may keep, much like breeding mice at home to feed to your snake, which many people do.
You can always hatch the babies and give them to a rep shop or sell them, but I've never been to happy with the idea that they might not be properly cared for, which really is animal cruelty. I would feel responsible for the homes the babies would go to and would have to take responsibility for that myself which is an awful lot to do if you're going to do it properly.
Hence I would prevent issue by either not breeding them or by removing the eggs once laid.
PunkAsf82: from what I've observed in other reptiles, leucistic usually means you get a white body with blue eyes or something similar - I'm very jealous! They're gorgeous! Hypos tend to be intensified colours, but whatever you get they sound stunning. I've read in places that Leos can breed all year in the right conditions so it might not be wise if you don't want your work cut out for you! Also, if you do want to hatch eggs, you have to be really careful not to change their original position when you move them into an incubator. If you 'upend' an egg, the placenta (can't remember the proper word) detaches and the animal dies, resulting in a rotting egg. Consensus seems to be that they lay pairs of eggs every few days for several weeks, but it depends on the age of the leo.. anything from 2-20! I think their natural breeding time starts around feb but don't quote me on that.. they also have to be at least 65g in weight for a female or they may not be able to lay the eggs and die
Wow, that was long. |
