A few weeks ago i did my practise silver Duke of edinbourough epedition in Exmoor. On the last day me and my group got lost (bad point) but i did find an antler (good point)

Anyway, i want to put in in Henry's viv but how should i go about cleaning it? I thought about soaking, scrubbing and then baking it, but im not sure if the bone will take the heat of the oven? Maybe bleach? Any one with any experience cooking antlers? [;D]

Just be careful with baking. Antlers are made from the same type of body tissue as hair & skin, so baking for an hour may literally cook the antler and I expect the small could be rather strong!!

Im pretty sure antlers are normal bone, its horns that are made of keratin. Either way i think the oven might break it down a bit. I will probably bleach it.

Boil it in a pan - Had an old science teacher that used to collect sheep skulls she found (strange I know!) but she used to boil them in a bleach and water solution to get all the rotten skin and stuff off -

We got into a big argument on our DofE about which way to go, we split up and one group took the map and the group I was in (we were sure we knew which way we were going) took just a compass - the other group got lost! We set up camp 4 hours before the others got back and went to the pub.

I used to collect skulls with my old flatmate, we used to throw ours onto a nice big wood-ant nest and come back a few days later, that really used to get it visibly sparkling.
Obviously this will only work in the nice weather though.

I second Lewy, boiling is great. Used to do it with skulls I collected but I didn't use bleach.. just boiled them for a few hours or let them simmer overnight.... and NO I'm not Lewy's teacher lol

Its been sitting in bleach for ages and its starting to look good. It was just the bone of the antler left anway (it must have been there for a while)
