Hey guys, ive kept bearded dragons for a few years and decided to venture into snakes,my new lil fellow(i'll post some pics later) I picked him up today (12/09/08) His record is as follows..
Hatched 13/07/08 Fed 02/08/08 and 27/08/08
According to his record at the reptile centre he hasn't shed his skin yet although he's 14 inches long ( surely he must have shedded by now ),he's only fed twice in almost 2 months is this ok ? he's very active and lively and doesnt look thin, his eyes are nice and clear, vent clean and tongue flicking every couple of seconds. His new viv is set up correctly with the gradient temp(hot end 84 and cool end 75 deg's). I've left him alone to explore his new 4 ft viv today and wil;l try him with a pinkie tomorrow.just wondered if as a hatchling his lack of feeding records was anything to worry about.. Thanx

Hello and welcome to the forum, that record doesn't sound very accurate, he should have certainly shed by now and i would hope he would have been fed more than that, mine was feeding every 5 days at that age. Incomplete records are always a little bit of a concern but do not necessarily mean there is or ever will be anything wrong with your snake. If I were you i would try to start feeding more regularly, keep your own detailed records and partition that viv, as corns can be scared of large open spaces as youngsters. Hope that helps :) |

4 Foot? it will take him 3 years to grow into that He would be happier in a small tub at that age and size. Let him settle in a small tight space, make him feel safe and secure, then offer him a pinky. If he has been without food or space to move, it may effect his shedding, but you would be able to tell that he had a bad shed, or missed one. Have a close look at his eyes for retained/unpeeled caps. Feeding him will also stretch and loosen his skin.
Good luck with him and welcome |

Snakes usually shed before their first feed, so he probably has. That feeding record sounds like a pet-shop maintenance diet!
As Mark says, that viv is far too big for him and may cause you problems. Young snakes are agoraphobic and prefer tight spaces to hide away from predators. Also, I would leave him a few more days before trying to feed, and then a couple more days after before handling him to allow him to digest his food.

ideally for a 14" corn you'd want about a 12"x6" faunarium of one with a similar floor dimension. he'll feel very insecure in a viv that size (but it's ideal for when he's an adult) which might stress him out and stop him feeding. Also how on earth do you find him in a viv that size, lol?? like people have already said, he will probably have shed before his first teed and feed every 5 days for a hatchling.

If you do need to buy a faunarium to put him in until he's grown a bit- you can't beat Wilkinsons for theirs- £4.99!!!!!!!
It's the bargain of the century! |
