I have just got the bug for snakes, Can you tell me if my set up is ok for rat snake. viv 39"L X 20"H X 14"D heat mat with thermostat with probe touching mat, digi thermometer also with probe on mat. 60 watt energy saving light bulb on celing of viv wood chippings on floor 2 cork bark hides in viv and water bowl.

how big is your snake? 60w energy saving bulb?

The size viv you have described would suit a 5' snake, so should be about right for a Rat.

Sounds good to me but I would get a bulb guard for the light bulb or get a low watt (9 or 15 W) bulb to avoid burns. Is the heat mat about 1/3 the size of the viv floor?

If the length + width of the viv is equal or bigger to the length of the snake, then the viv is large enough.

lenght of viv is 39 inches but the snake is only 18 inches. seems a bit big.

viv sounds fine for that size snake, post some pics so we can have a look too Mitch
BTW you didn't pick up a Jap Rat from Donny show did you???
