Hi I recently got a young corn snake who is about 6 months old. He/she shed after a week of obtaining him. It's been about 2 months and has just shed.Which we thought was quite long. He didn't shed in one go and is a little flaky just below the head area and a little on the rest of the body.He seams quite dry. The temperature of the vivarium is right but I think his water bowl is too small. What should we do? What is the best way to remove the dead skin? any help would gratefully received!

| Give him a bath for as long as he'll tollerate and rub it really gently, it worked a treat on ginge who had 3 layers of skin stuck on her tail when we got her (long story). |

a luke warm bath, with water about as deep as the snakes body (certainly no deeper than twice as deep as the body) for about 10 mins, then let him run through a towel. it's important to get all the shed skin off or it can create problems such as infections (particularly with eye caps) and even tail tips dropping off due to the old skin restricting the blood flow.
make sure the water bowl in the viv is big enough for the snake to curl up in if he chooses - only fill it half full or it will overflow in the viv when he gets in! misting the viv daily with a water spray and putting in a damp hide will all help the shedding process. the damp hide doesn't need to be anything flash, you can improvise with an appropriately sized tub (margerine? ice cream?) with dampened sphagnum moss or just damp shredded paper  |

| Cheers thanks for your advise! The bath seems to have worked a treat. All the dead skin has come off. I will definately get some moss and a bigger water bowl for young Kerry! |

| Hi, just noticed this morning that Kerry has a bit of dried skin left on his head just above the eyes like a skull cap. His eyes are bright and there seems to be no problems there, gave him another bath and gently rubbed his head but this bit doesn't want to budge, any ideas? |

Possibly make a damp moss hide from Ice Cream tub or similar with just airholes instead of holes to get in and out with and just put damp sphagnum moss or damp shredded paper towels in there and put him in and leave (inside viv of course) for half an hour or so to 'steam' a little... (mmm... broiled snake ) and then gently rub with damp cotton bud or similar when you get him out??... Sure there are some other idea's involving pillow cases etc on here somewhere, but not sure where...
