Posted - 11/07/2009 : 15:20:03 Two of my corns are sexed but three aren't, my nearest rep specialist is miles (and I do mean miles, right out in the sticks) away from me and I no longer have transport so I can't get there. I wouldn't trust any of my local pet shops even if they offered the service (which to be honest I doubt it as any that do sell reps do so as a kind of 'sideline')
I need to get the others sexed, not least because I have two living together (although they've not mated yet so I doubt it's a male and female - but best to be sure)
I was thinking about getting probes and trying myself, I've read up on how to do it but to be honest, having not seen it done I really don't feel confident enough - the last thing I'd want to do is injure my snakes and it certainly sounds a delicate proceedure.
Does anyone have any advice, or is anyone local to Birmingham who may no of someone who is competant??
Cheers, Han |

Posted - 21/10/2009 : 19:40:04 Probing should only be attempted by someone who has been properly shown how to do it, on a snake of a known sex, under supervision, on a relatively docile snake.
I wouldnt feel happy doing it myself. |

Posted - 18/10/2009 : 21:58:50 I definitely wouldn't try it myself, I just wanted to find out for when I get mine. |

Posted - 18/10/2009 : 21:22:33 Snakes can be sexed by an experienced person from at ANY age.
Whether they are 2 days old, or 19 years old. The way they are sexed will changed as they get older though.
Younger ones get 'popped' older ones get probed.
But DO NOT attempt to pop or probe unless you are under the supervision of a someone who is experienced and trained in doing it.
I guy I used to know caused a massive prolapse because he tried to pop his. |

Posted - 18/10/2009 : 21:07:30 Sorry to jump in on this thread, I have a quick question(s), how soon can a hatchling be sexed at? And can either method be used? And is there really an older age limit that they can't be done? |

Posted - 12/07/2009 : 22:47:13 Apparently you can tell from the tail shape as well - but from the pix I'm looking at then Daksha would be a male, and she was probed and is female - so I'm just confused!

Maybe I'll just guess! lol
Looks like it may have to be the vet then - saying that I'd still like to learn for myself, someone should run a snake sexing class or something - it's a useful skill for any owner to have, even if they're not thinking of breeding |

Posted - 11/07/2009 : 21:20:51 They're all to big to be 'popped' I think. My youngest is a couple of foot now at least - it's about two years old, and the other two that I need to sex are about three. The two females that I know about are about five and four ft. |
