Hey guys, so Luna is possibly gravid and I'm wondering about her laying box. She's had a moist hide in there for about 2 weeks (I put it in when I first saw her go blue, and haven't taken it out because she might lay?). I had sphagnum moss in there at first, but found it went very musty and seemed to grow a bit of mould too. It wasn't excessively damp, I think I had it about right, but as soon as I found to mould I took it out and instead put vermiculite in the hide. However, Luna doesn't seem to like this as much as the moss and I'm worried she won't be happy to lay on it. What do you guys use for lay boxes and why? I'd appreciate any advice on this, since if she is gravid she'll lay quite soon. Thanks :)

How did your snakes behaviour change just before she laid? I'[m trying to watch for warning signs from Luna, she's alternating between digging enthusiastically in her moist hide and sitting in her normal hide, just watching...she's a lot more active than normal.

Sounds good. I think they enjoy being able to burrow in the moss. Kali laid her eggs today, curled under the moss They are now on moss in the incubator. Good luck with Luna, I hope she lays for you soon

Today I gave that snake some moss. Snakes love moss. The minute she smelled it, she was like 'ermahgerd, sphergnum merss!!' She hasn't stopped playing in it, I sort of feel bad for taking it away in the first place. I left the vermiculite in too, so there's a layer of vermiculite and a thin layer of moss on top. Hopefully will encourage her into the box a lot more now XD

I use moss and have for about 15 year but last year used vermiculite and my eggs took a lot longer to hatch 1 clutch took 90 day to fully hatch I don't know if it had anything to do with that but went back to moss this year

I've had this moss in the lay box for over 2 weeks and no mould Although I have used the same moss in moist hides before and it has gone a bit nasty after just a few days. I think I had too much water in it before, or it was a bad batch of moss.

I plan to incubate on sphagnum moss too if all goes well

Do you ever find it goes mouldy? I used some a while ago, it was dry loose moss, and it was fine, but this lot is a dry compacted block you have to soak for a while. I rinsed it thoroughly a few times because it seemed to have a lot of mud in it, and it went very musty very quickly.

I have sphagnum moss in my lay box at the moment Still waiting for my gravid female to lay on it though.

I have pics on my other thread just belowe this one that give an idea of how deep I had it but will try and find one from before she laid her eggs

How deep did you have it in the hide? Don't suppose you have any pics?

I used Vermiculite and my female loved it. She dug around and got covered in the stuff. She laid her eggs nicely in it too I didn't have any moss or spare money to go get any at the time due to unexpected circumstances but she loved it so I was OK. I guess it's up to you?
