looking for advice so heres the set up
Hatched from 12th-16th July 12
All get offered food every 4 days
Temp 29
Live in 16cmx8cmx6cm tubs
3 non eaters
Weigh 6g now and all where 8g when hatched out
Tubs are blacked out
Only shed once
1 3meals then stopped
8g not lost or gained weight
Tub is blacked out
Second shed 2nd Sep 12
1 last meal 17th Aug 12
Went into shed and not eaten again
Hatched 8g
22nd Aug 12 12g
26th Sep 10g
Tub not blacked out (thought to keep the conditions the same as when was eating)
1 Slow Starter
Very aggressive always stricking even when he was still in the incubator and still has his moments!
Refused to eat till 13th August
Moved from blacked out tub after 3 meals to normal clear tub
Really good eater now
8g when hatched and 12g now
5 Good Feeders
Never refused a meal unless shedding
1 shed for the 3rd time on the 18th aug 12 and is the heaviet at 20g (10wks old)
All have never had a bad shed even the non feeders. im really looking for any other suggestions getting the non feeder going, i have tried all the tips on the forum apart from taking them for a drive tip just thought i would share and see if there is anything else i can do |

Scenting with chick thigh has good rep, will be trying myself next week :)
Also heard if you can get some natural yoghurt into their stomachs it stimulates appetite |

I think it must be accepted that some hatchies are destined to be non feeders.
obviously not saying dont try!! but dont beat yourself up about it.
I onyl had 2 non feeders this year, and one of them even ate once and then decided against it! |

Things i have tried with the non feeders
Unsucessful to date
Braining, splitting the head fully open, puncutring the chest/lungs, offering full pinkies/down to a piece the size of the pinkies head (now only offer very small meals), offered them sections of mice tail, scented the pinkies with tuna/salmon/sardines(placed scales on the pinkies also)- even got used bedding from my friends rats to help scent. Defrosted and rubbed on adult mice, defrosted at room tempature, heated with hair dryer focusing on the head.

the non feeders get pritty much left alone, when changing them out i can tell they are not as active, still have water and occasionally will have messes but not for some time now. is there any behaviour to look out for as i only wish/hope im not missing anything. the advice i have recieved is that its nature but i want to provide correct condition/opportunitie should they change there minds. At this stage im not really considering force feeding unless anyone knows of sucess storie from doing it where they eat independently. Its all still new and im learning so hope the details at least give someone in the same postion an idear what to expect. |
