I've had a corn snake for almost three years and I have been trying to find out when the best time to breed her would be. Everywhere tells me this 3 3's rule. But it's very close to 3 years, she is about an inch away from 3 foot as well. Yet she is only 86g. Is this normal?

i would def question the weight x length, scales may be off, or are you weighing empty tub, putting her in and when you do tub+ snake weight minus tub weight somehow going wrong with the maths? (maybe she weighs more than you think?)
I have a female carolina about 3 footish who is 300g+ and eating either large or jumbo size mice

(and is NOT a fatty!!)

I know snakeys are all different vis growth rate etc but yr measurements don't seem to make sense

hope you work it out-
ps- she is very pretty, when she is ready you should get some lovely babbies

I've got to agree I'm afraid, she looks like she's having far too easy a time with that fuzzy. She can definitely manage something at least twice as big.

I'm fairly sure that the scales are okay, they seem to work for my brothers python. She is about 2 foot and 10 or 11 inches.
I know they're good at stretching, I bet I've just been too cautious with picking mice sizes. Far too cautious by the sounds of things. Don't worry I had no intention of breeding her until I knew she was healthy to do so.
I'll get her a small mouse tomorrow and see how she likes it.
Thanks for all the help guys, I'll definitely post some pictures on here showing how she's doing.

I think the main reason she is so tiny for her age is that you haven't moved up her food sizes- at her age she should be managing large mice, not fuzzies. You're underfeeding her. You need to up her food size to small mice, every 5 days probably.

You say her jaw is too small but snakes really can manage huge prey items-

4 footer eating a wiener rat

3.5 footer eating a chick

and a 5 MONTH old eating a fuzzy

Move her up a food size, and definitely do NOT breed from her any time soon.

This is an older picture of her with one of her fuzzy's. She has two of these in just under a week.

can you add a photo of snake with foods,
mikejlunt Posted - 19/02/2012 : 16:01:52
I wouldn't breed her until I was 100% sure it was safe.
She has 2 fuzzy's every 6 days.
gmac Posted - 19/02/2012 : 15:58:41
dont breed this girl until shes at least 300g so she is a long wat from breeding, Im more interested about her weight at that age and size though. what feeding regime do you have
mikejlunt Posted - 19/02/2012 : 15:50:32
Yeah absolutely, I'll put one on as soon as I can in the morning, she fed this morning so I wont disturb her just yet.
It's been a few weeks since I last weighed her so I will re-do that also to get a more accurate weighing.
But as a rough idea, her max diameter is about (off the top of my head) 1.5cm.
She is still on fuzzy's, because her jaw isn't big enough to cope with things bigger.
