Posted - 30/04/2011 : 20:52:34 I am not considering breeding, but i do find the genetics behind the morphs quite interesting, but somewhat confusing.
I understand (or at least I think i do) that the 'wild' gene is dominant. I have had a look at the morph calculator thing associated with Ian's vivarium and it confused me. If for instance I had an Amel female and a Caramel Male, the calculator said it would produce 100% normal het amel caramel's but on a list on the same website stated this pairing would produce butters...
can anyone give me a quick basic crash course...
thanks

I think the list you're looking at there is the one that lists which base morphs make up the combinations, eg 'Amel + Caramel' together makes the 'Butter' combination. |

Posted - 30/04/2011 : 21:22:08 so if you bred an amel to an amel you would get amels, amel to a normal you would get normals, but from a amel to a normal het amel you would produce both amels, and normal het amels... |

Posted - 30/04/2011 : 21:18:23 aahhh that makes sense i think, so in order to get visual morphs you basically need to know the hets.. and you need 2 copies of the gene to make it visual otherwise you just produce normal hets... ??? |

Posted - 30/04/2011 : 21:01:46 Basically, in most cases you need each parent to have a copy of a certain gene in order to make a visual morph.
Eg: for butters-
Normal het amel and caramel x Normal het amel and caramel Amel het caramel x Amel het caramel Caramel het amel x Caramel het amel Butter x Butter
If you don't have 2 copies of the same gene then you will end up with a het, a hidden gene, in the offspring. |

Posted - 30/04/2011 : 20:58:20 you cant get butters from pairing amel and caramel. You will get normals het for amel and caramel as it says in the calc. Butters are a double trait morph that is made up of amel and caramel but to produce this morph both parent snakes must have the amel and caramel genes.
Most genes are recessive in corn snakes so to produce visual morphs bot parent snakes must have the same genes present to hatch morphs, if they dont have the same genes the hatchies will be normals. |
