Hi all, you have all been very helpful with my last questions and worries, so I was wondering if you could help with heating for hatchlings:
I am planning on breeding my snakes next breeding season, and I know all about the incubator set up, but seeing as I am planning on making my own incubator, I was sort of hoping that I could use the same heat mat and pulse stat for the hatchlings, so, a few questions:
1) Seeing as the heat mat would be a rectangle shaped one, not the strip ones, would it matter if the heat mat wasn't underneath the plastic tubs? Instead on one wall of the viv type thing they would be stacked in? (If all that makes sense, not brilliant at explaining things?)
2) What are the ideal temperatures for the heat mat? I know they have to be very precise etc
3)(This may seem a bit dense of me), What is better about a pulse stat than a mat stat, I heard that the pulse stats are so much better for the incubator, just wondering why? LoL.

Thanks, Phoebe xx

Ohh okayy thanks, So I am guessing I will have to buy a heat mat, pulse stat and a heat cable? Just checking. Thanks!!

i use a 90w 17x11 heatmat taped to the lid of a poly box for the incubator, thats on a pulse stat too

Ohh okayy, now get it!! Thanks!! Would that work for incubating?

i cable tie the heat cable along the wooden slats in the rack so the hatchlings tubs sit on top

Thanks eeji, So with the heat cable where abouts would I put it? Tahh x

its a cable that gets warm :D

if you use Freecycle or similar, post a wanted for a shoe rack or something like, or have a look in the argos/ikea catalogue :)

Thanks both of you, do you know where I could get a rack then? Tahh x

Ohh, and sorry I am being stupid, but what is a heat cable?

mines very similar too, but heat cable is much better at radiating heat than a heat mat.

i use a cheapo wood slatted rack for hatchling tubs with heat cable tied up with cable ties, temperature controlled by a pulse stat. its a cheap and cheerful system, but it works :)

1, it would work, but is not ideal, heatmats dont radiate much heat, the work much better on touch.
2, normal temps, so 27 - 28
3, a pulse stat will pulse the energy to the heatmat, so can regulate the temperature much more accurately, a mat stat is basically a temp stat, so will reach a predetermined temp, then switch off, once it has dropped below the set temp, it will switch back on, therefore the temps may fluctuate by 3 or 4 degrees, where as a pulse and dimmer stat will vary about 0.5 degrees.
