After being missing for 7 months and through the coldest winter that I can remember, Bubbles has finally decided he's had enough adventures and has come home!
I haven't seem him yet as I'm at work but according to OH he looks well and has grown so he must have found food somewhere! He has a couple of sore spots where it looks like scales have come off so I'll have to have a look at this when I get home and probably a visit to the vets just to get him checked over.
For those that don't remember, Bubbles went missing when the neighbours were looking after him during our holiday last year. He turned up in their kitchen, sitting on their bread board!
I can't tell you how happy I am to have him safely home!  |

So glad vets visit went so well....and such a relief that it isnt mites! I guess it isnt surprising that he has a few damaged scales, who knows where he has been hiding out over these last 7 months  ! But at least it is only that and not any sort of infection or anything worse  .
It sounds like you have a very good and supportive vet, which is great....and, if you are anything like me  , it is good to have a plan to follow to get Bubbles back on track and putting some weight on.
Your vet makes a good point about the dehydration and it certainly explains Bubbles soaking in his bowl. It is something we stress when snakes escape - the need to leave down water for them as they can go for a long time without food but not that long without water. I think he did amazingly to have lasted as long as he did considering he was somewhere you had no control over and couldnt do what you would have wanted to do to find him or even just leave water for him to drink....and then of course the months pass  ....but he is home where he belongs and that truly shows how hardy corns are !
It is sad, but true, what your vet said about seeing snakes in a worse condition than Bubbles when they are brought in by their 'caring' owners  .....which is so wrong! At least Bubbles is back with his truly caring owner getting the tender loving care he needs....and all snakes should have!
I realise it is going to be tough going away and leaving your snakes again, but now you know that Bubbles is relatively healthy you can relax a bit. I am sure that your neighbours will be very aware of what happened last time and will know how worried you will be - so trust them....not too many phonecalls checking up on your slithery friends  !
Go away, have fun, come home and, by then, you will be able to handle Bubbles again and start the process of getting to know each other again .

Vets visit went well . No mites, which is such a relief - just a couple of damaged scales which should sort out next shed or two. He's slightly underweight, but mainly due to dehydration, which vet says is probably why he's been languishing in his water!
He said to just take our time with the feeding and build him up gradually - pinkies to start and build up through fuzzies back up to small mice, to give his gut flora chance to recover from the dehydration.
Overall though he said he's seen snakes in much worse condition who'd been in their vivs for the past 7 months. So I'm reassured and can go away on holiday relatively relaxed (although, having someone else looking after them again is going to worry me!) |

Sorry you didnt get to hold him Abbie, but at least he has eaten. Dont be surprised that he didnt take the mouse....he is probably just getting over all the excitement and change. Just try him on the small mouse again next feed and if he doesnt want it maybe you could try 2 pinkies??
I am glad you are seeing the vet with him, at least that way you can be sure about the mites. If you have him on kitchen roll and cant see any black or red (blood) dots, or anything on him then I am not sure about his soaking being down to mites....but then I am no expert, although I have had to deal with mites. Maybe he is soaking because of whatever has caused the discoloured or damaged scales, or just because he gets relief from any discomfort they are causing him. At least he is seeing the vet so you can get to the bottom of what is going on.
In a way it is good that you are going away - I know that sounds bizarre but he could do with a settling in period after being returned to his new viv and with you away you wont have the frustration of not being able to handle him ! I am sure the neighbours who are looking after your 3 this time round will have learnt a lesson from what happened to Bubbles! Just try and go away, have a good time and NOT WORRY (easy to type, hard to do - I know )!!!

When I got home last night OH had fed Bubbles so couldn't have a hold of him. He couldn't seem to manage a small mouse but did eat a pinky (but only one). He has definitely grown and doesn't look thin so must have been eating whilst he's been on his holiday. (I assume the neighbours must have a mouse problem - or at least did!)
But I think he may have mites. He's been soaking in his water bowl since he got back.
As we don't have a spare viv (OH has rushed out today to buy one) he's in the feeding RUB at the moment and we've just got his water bowl, a hide and kitchen towel for substrate. Couldn't see any black dots on kitchen towel or in water, but he does appear to have some small grey patches which look like discoloured or damaged scales. Could this be down to mites?
We're going on holiday again on Saturday and have another neighbour looking after the 3 of them (just coming across to change the water each day) I'll have to ensure they don't mix up any stuff between the vivs - I'd hate for all of them to end up with mites. Vets appt tomorrow morning. So will see what he says. |

Abbie, that is amazing news....and gives such hope to others who have a lost snake at the moment.
I do remember when Bubbles went missing, your neighbours were looking after him while you were away but when he escaped they didnt seem bothered and actually thought you were over-reacting! Think they were also having the decorators in to the kitchen where you were convinced he was hiding down a hole??!! You even contacted RSPCA and rescue centres....you did so much to try to find him.
I bet that was such a surprise to your neighbours to walk in to their kitchen and find him curled up on their breadboard! I expect that they had forgotten all about him ....but would have loved to see the look on their faces when they saw him !
All that is important is that he is home where he belongs, not particularly the worse for wear (which shows how hardy corns are) and you have now gained an extra snake !!
Let us know how he gets on at the vets....

From what hubby told me they were OK although they didn't try to catch him! Just ran round to get him and asked him to pick him up. Good job he hadn't disapearred again before OH got round there!

That's fantastic news! Bubbles went missing when I first joined the forum and I remember what a horrible time it was for you wanting to rip up the floors in someone else's home but them (for some reason) not letting you. Were the neighbours OK about him turning up suddenly or were they a bit freaked?

We still have his viv but it has a new occupant! OH will be dashing out tomorrow to buy new viv, heat mat, stat etc. We still have his hide, water bowl and some bits and pieces so he's in the feeding box overnight, sharing a heat mat with one of the others! |

WOW! i remember when he went missin. all that time hes been at ur neighbours! im so glad he made it through the horrible winter, corns are alot tougher than i thought they were!

I bet it wasn't these past months, but since it all turned out well, you can laugh about it!
