No you won't pull the skin off, whoever told you that needs shooting. Scales may come off, but if they do, they would have come off anyway, and will grow back quickly. Give him a bath and pull the skin off, it should come off nice and easily.
Thanks for the correction Mike, think it was a forum member who actually had this experience and shared it where I picked up the information from....but I must have got it wrong . It is why I am so pleased to have experienced owners like you to give the right advice!
Apologies also to the OP for giving the wrong advice .

Posted - 09/03/2010 : 04:30:28 Getting back to Sam's worries .....
Please dont be tempted to try and pick the retained shed off to 'help' him get rid of it....this is very dangerous as it can pull off the new scales and even the skin underneath.
The advice you have been given by HannahB and Danny is perfect and the sooner done the better. Please let us know how you get on.
To help him out next time he sheds, once you see him go 'blue' (as in his eyes going cloudy and his scales dull) add an extra water bowl into his viv on top of the heat mat. This will help raise the humidity. I also mist my snakes' vivs once a day in the morning, nothing more than that as you dont want to cause the humidity to rise too much as this can cause respiratory infections. The damp hide will also help.
I do hope that he is ok and you have managed to help him get the rest of his shed skin off.....remember to check that the tail tip and the eye caps are present and not still on him.

Posted - 09/03/2010 : 00:55:40 I personally don't give two shinings how things are spelt really, my grammar and spelling can be atrocious sometimes. So long as it's legible and understandable then I don't see what the issue is.

Posted - 08/03/2010 : 19:45:04 id try the bath option first, if you are worried about putting them in the big bath then you could use a small lunchbox or a live foods plastic tub also when letting them wriggle through the towel applying a little bit of pressure can often help with getting retained shed off |

Posted - 08/03/2010 : 16:28:00 Hey, how long ago was it that he shed the top 1/3?
If it was only just then he may well get it off on his own, if it has been a couple of hours then you may want to intervene.
Firstly dampen some kitchen paper or a small towel with luke warm water and let your snake wriggle through it, holding firmly so that the skin comes off. Take care as to make sure that the tip of the tail also comes off with the shed, after running through it a couple of times the skin should have come off. If so then check the head piece to make sure the eye caps have come off.
If not then run a luke warm bath, making sure that there is just enough water in so that your snakes belly can touch the bottom. Put a digi therm in it to make sure that the water is between 27 and 28 degrees. Let him swin in it for a couple of minutes or untill the temps drop to around 22 degrees and then take him out and let him run through a towel. The water should have helped to loosen and dislodge the skin.
Next time you notice that your snake is going into shed you may want to put a damp hide in his faun/ viv, it should make the process easier for your snakey.
Oh and by the way, the term used when a snakes malts is shed, not shred |
