Posted - 06/03/2010 : 21:40:26 Heartbroken doens't cover it. I feel so guilty because I didn't plug the gap up where her probe goes in properly and she got out that way. I feel so terrible.
We've searched the usual places - back of the fridge, airing cupboard - but we're a messy pair and we just don't know what to do or where to start. L is convinced she's dead; we can't remember seeing her since her last feed on Monday although I *think* I might have seen her since. And of course we have two cats and a dog and she'd make a lovely toy/snack for them. So we don't even know how long she's been out. She found out she'd gone because it was feeding time today. I've put flour down round the edges of the kitchen and on the worktop where her and Luna's houses are. We put a freshly defrosted fuzzy in a drinks bottle in a corner near the radiator. What else can we do??
My poor Bella. |

Posted - 28/06/2010 : 04:36:21 Glad you are happy that Bella's viv is escape-proof Jac (both mine have nice red plastic binders down the middle of their vivs!). Although with Bella I am not sure anything can hold her !!
The thought of your 2 boas escaping....with 1 learning how to open the lock ....and the destruction they could have caused in your rep room should have made me worried....but I am afraid it only made me laugh ....sorry Mike !

Posted - 24/06/2010 : 10:28:14 If you want to make a really easy lock, if you get a wire coat hanger, cut it down, then you can bend it into a shape that slides between the glass and locks the glass. I will post pics up later and a how to guide, but its very easy. |

Posted - 24/06/2010 : 10:08:27 Viv doors are blocked with a plastic binder and everything is all fixed up now! (I was waiting for a new heat mat.) She seems quite content and had a nice small mouse yesterday and a lovely big poo this morning. Yum! |

Posted - 24/06/2010 : 07:32:40 This is the good thing about having really big boas, they literally cannot hide anywhere! A couple of weeks ago, I woke up when I heard something fall over, I assumed it was kate crashing about getting ready for work, until she moved! We went and checked, both the big boas were out, they had undone the latch on their viv and slid the glass open! The 7 foot girl was on top of the hatchling rack, and the 9ft surinam was going underneath the adult rack, for those who have seen the pics of my setup, you know which I am talking about, its on top of a 3' viv, bearing in mind there is nearly 20 snakes, tubs, waterbowls etc on this rack, where she squeezed under, she lifted the whole lot up! At least I know that those 2 cannot leave the room! The can wreck it, but unless they start pulling up floorboards, which wouldn't surprise me, they not goin anywhere!
The funny thing is, I watched the surinam watch me slide the glass and put the lock in, I watched her trying to slide the glass, I took the lock out, and helped her open it, as soon as it moved, she went straight for the gap and opened it more with her nose. Boas are most definately even more intelligent than they look! |

Posted - 24/06/2010 : 03:35:45 I cant believe it Jac !! Bella certainly does have wanderlust ! I am just so glad you noticed as quickly as you did and found her before she disappeared under that dishwasher. I cant even begin to imagine how you felt when you saw she had gone again ....but she is back, which is all that is important !!
I know you have been preparing her viv and it may not be ready to your perfect standards....but I am sure she will cope ! Her pushing out that plug shows how resourceful and determined she is, so I am sure you are making certain that her new home is Bella-proof! Remember that small gap between the glass doors....she can slide through that with a bit of a squeeze, so get it blocked up!
I dont want to see this thread being carried on with a 3rd escape !

Posted - 23/06/2010 : 11:34:10 with the size of baby corn snakes they have the girth of a boot lace and they can squeeze through the tightest of gaps. many people dont reccomend housing a corn snake in a viv until its big enough to not get through pencil sized holes and gaps, but house them in a small critter keeper instead with a small heat mat. ill tell you a story my nearly 7 foot rat snake escaped from his viv a few weeks after i got him, i never had a lock on the viv and he had the strength to push open the glass along the sliders and got out, all the other bedroom doors were shut so only one was open was his room and the bathroom, we searched for 3 hours that night looking for him, all in his room, all under the stairs and not one sign we was saying "how can a giant snake hide so well"? we came to the conclusion that he had gone down the toilet and would never be seen again, but just before we give up hope we had an idea to look behind the bath panel as there was a hole in it for a pipe to come out, and my dad took it off and there he was coiled up covered in dust lol had to give him a bath lol but i got a lock on the viv now |

Posted - 23/06/2010 : 08:07:19 Lol, these things happen. I had one escape, found it on the rack, I sorted his escape route, within 12 hours he was out again and took me 2 weeks to find!
You will probably find that she has eaten since being out, they are very good hunters and even captive bred they still excel at it. |

Posted - 23/06/2010 : 07:54:53 The little chuffing escape artist did it again! Luckily I found her on the kitchen floor this time so she must have only just got out - she was heading under the dishwasher. GODAMMIT! I'm getting rid of that useless leaky viv and have stuffed her into her bigger, secure one even though it isn't quite ready for her. BAD SNAKE!! |

Posted - 25/05/2010 : 14:06:10 I reckon she was under there cooling off in the warm spell - our house gets FAR TOO HOT very quickly and there's a nice draught by the front door. Unlucky for her Shadow is hawk-eyed! |

That is amazing news Jacqui .....I am sure that you tried not to give up hope but it has been a long 2 months since she went missing.
I cant believe Shadow found her under the front door mat! I am sure another forum member found their snake in exactly the same place!
I guess it isnt surprising she gave you a good nip, who knows where she has been and what she has been doing all this time. It is great that she is looking good and has already eaten....so is settling in.
I would suggest a hands-off period (longer than the usual 48hrs after a feed), just to let her get readjusted to being back in her viv and to your smells again....then it is back to taking it slowly with the handling and seeing how she reacts.
I am so relieved for you and Shadow definitely deserves lots of praise!

Posted - 24/05/2010 : 12:43:23 So glad she's back safe & well. I know how happy you must be feeling and a big juicy bone to Shadow the dog!!!
As its been nearly 3 months since she disappeared, you should start by feeding her smaller prey than she was eating before she disappeared. If she's dehydrated she'll need some time for her gut flora to get back up to speed. When Bubbles came home after his 7 month holiday, the vet told us to take it slowly with the feeding at first, start him on pinkies and move gradually up the prey size until he was back on small mice. He's now back up to his normal prey size without any problems. Happy home coming Bella! |

Bella is back home :) The dog actually found her about 15 minutes ago; he was snuffling at the front door mat and the other half went out to see what was going on and saw her tail poking out and grabbed her! I'm so happy :) Even if she did give me a nip when I reached out to hold her. That's my girl :) She has had a nice long drink and is currently squeezing the fattest fluff we have down. She looks in pretty good nick actually; she's not lost much weight at all.
We're ordering a secure new viv for her tomorrow...!
I'M SO HAPPY! Big round of applause for Shadow the dog :) |

Posted - 08/03/2010 : 17:14:29 don't feel quilty, don't panic, and don't stop looking! 2 of those are easier said than done i know, but they are crucial in your efforts to finding her. ima keep my fingers and toes crossed for her safe return, she will pop up eventually |
