never had any probs with glass cracking, as i have always used air flow gap on my glass tanks regardless of make of mat etc. Some of the glass tanks have the riser feet to allow for this, but i do find its alot of trial n error n common sense.. you find the right option in the end that works for you.. as most advice is only a guide line anyway.

i put an old tea towel on top of the heat mat that is on the out side of my tank and put the tank on the top, the towel stops cracking i learned this the hard way lol

Please regard what other people say too...and if you read it I said I used polystyrene ONLY to STOP surfaces underneath heating up too much

Oh so polystyrene isnt that good

air gap with ALL heat mats/glass tanks, just to be on the safe side. My first snake was kept in a glass tank with some-make-or-other heat mat and polystyrene tile insulation and it cracked the glass

as far as i'm aware it's only the E-T ones that require air circulation, other brands are fine inside.

I have mine, on polystyrene to not make my surface heat up to much and the thermostat to tell me the right heat...if you have thermometers inside the tank and outside you can make sure the heat is RIGHT inside the tank on the warm side compared to outside...I was told to have my mat on the outside but im sure it depends only on the amt you have..

glass viv outside with air flow gap... wooden viv inside .. either way needs to be controlled with stat n therm

who on earth told you to take it out?

have you read the care sheet on here yet and is there a snake in the viv already?
and is the heatmat (regardless of where it is situated) controlled with a thermostat?

to the OP: i've deleted your duplicate thread!

generally they're fine on the outside BUT i think it's some Exo-Terra heatmats that MUST have an air gap for circulation and they usually come supplied with little feet to raise the bottom of the viv up from whatever you put it on. these mats are ONLY suitable for outside the viv, although most other mats, particularly habistat/eurorep ones are fine inside too. i suppose it really depends on the wiring issues and if you can easily run a wire into the viv...........
