One of our adult corns is looking reaaly ill. He has lost so much weight that you can see his spine although he is still eating on a weekly basis. He eats small rats with no problem. His housing is all fine and he is a socialable sweetheart. Any ideas please.

Thats great Mel that you have found a good reliable specialist there when you may need one in the future.

As said in my other post; I would be prudent and get a post mortem carried out on Jasper. I know it can be expensive (mine was around £90) but it will be worth it to know what the definate cause is; especially as you and your parents have other snakes. I hope it was nothing that can affect your other snakes but its not worth the risk not knowing.

I'm glad you found the site helpful and hope you will continue to use it.

If you have other snakes I would DEFINITELY get a PM done.

Thanks to all. I have 3 young corns and my parents have now 6 corns (only 2 adults now) a ball python and a milk snake!!

We didn't know how old Jasper was so it could have been old age x

All the others are thriving and giving us plenty of pleasure as well as easing the loss of Jasper x x

Again thanks Bengy, we have kept all the info and have also discovered that we can get in touch with the reptile experts at Pili Palais x

One quick note, if you plan to use the viv again, make sure you use something quite potent to disinfect it, sometimes these things can live a long time dormant.

Good point Mike. I disposed of Chester's viv, heating equipment and husbandary (mainly due to moving house and not having a snake to go in it) but before I did it I used a product called Virkon. It comes in powder or tablet form and it disolves in water (use gloves). Brilliant stuff it'll get rid of all bacteria. F10 is also reported to be great but I have not used it.

I use F10 cream on wounds, its absolutely amazing, one of my boas had a salmonella infection eating her nostril out, i used the f10 and cleared the whole thing up in 2 weeks! now she has a little crater where her nostril should be!

So sorry to hear about your snake, I have a very poorly wee snake at the moment so I fully empathise with you.

It may be worth getting a PM done, even if its just to get some closure on the whole nasty experience.

RIP your snake.x

Yep sorry to hear about Jasper dont let it put you off. I am sure in Jaspers memory you could give a really good home to another corn. Why not try using the space you have to give a home to a corn that needs it like many of the snakes that are out there in need of good homes. When we moved here to our permanent home I realised I could give a home to another corn (already had one) and so I got a set up ready for one that really needed a home and as it happens Xena came my way. She was quite poorly when I got her and with the help of these guys I have managed to bring her back from the brink. Maybe it may help you if you can put Jaspers old equipment to good use and adopt a corn that really needs the good home you can provide.

Hope that helps but in any case please accept my most heartfelt condolences at your loss.

Mel I am so sorry

I don't know what I can say to help! All I can say is a few of us know what its like and its heart breaking. You say he's an adult; did you have him from a hatchling or bought as an adult/sub-adult? It doesn't matter how long you have him (its upsetting either way) but I was just wondering if he was a new addition or not?

How many other snakes do you have? May I suggest that you get a post mortem carried out? I suggest this as obviously there is a chance it is something contagious (even though it seems your others show no symptoms i.e. weight loss) so its important you find out how it happened.

I will also add that when I had to put my Royal Python to sleep (he had a huge weight loss and neurological problems), I found I had a bit of closure to know what had caused his rapid decline.

I don't know why but it seems to be happening a lot on here recently, its really sad.

I hope you are coping ok and I'm sorry that our efforts to find a vet for him was too late.

Bengy thankyou so much for all your help.

Sadly Jasper died yesterday :-(

It was extremely quick and a total shock as everything happened so quickly x

Thanks Stephen, Jack and Rach- though my posts were a bit frantic trying to keep Mel updated of my searching!

On a topic of thanks, Rachael (sexybear)and her mum helped me understand my royal python's pathologist report (her mum is a pathologist). So although our comms were done through email, just wanted to say thanks to you again Rach; and to the rest of you that this forum and the sister site, TheRoyalPython, was great to me in my hour of need a while ago when I bought a really poorly snake so I am trying to help others too! Weather it be a small issue or large.

BTW any luck on our vegetarian clan logo yet Rach!?! No word on compensation for Chester yet but he's got til the 20th!

Nice one bengy, sure thats a great help for mel.

Mel- how long has this weight loss been going on. Slow and steady, or fast and dramatic?

If your snake is still eating well, but is losing so much weight, he may have an internal parasite load. Deffo worth an urgent trip to the vets.

In the meantime, a product called Reptoboost, which goes in the drinking water, will also help to keep his strength up.

Way to be a night in shining armour, maybe there is hope for the human race, after all. Nice one, bengy.

Sorry to embarrass you Bengy but I must commend you on your efforts on this post. It is reassuring to know there are members like yourself on this forum for times of need.

Thanks

Aran vet clinic states they treat small animals. D- anglesea Pet Clinic seems worth a ring. Not all have a website but if it were me I'd ring Aran or Anglesea Pet Clinic and state your case. If they can't help you they should give you a number of somewhere that will.

Hope you hear something positive soon.
