My eldest corn colin went into shed on the 5th of feb (went pale) seemed to go clear then went pale again and eventually shed during saturday night. I was expecting him to be starving as he refused his last feed whilst in blue which didnt suprise me but attempts to feed him last night went ignored.
I am not concerned as there are some factors which could have affected this...
First off when my rep dealer delivered some small mice the other week they were incredibly small and looked more like hoppers. I thought it may have been a good opportunity to feed colin two to get him ready for mediums so maybe the prey was too small and was therefore ignored.
Also as some of you will know I have been attempting to feed him out of the viv as he has always been a viv feeder and thinking after a shed he would be starving I tried again last night but I got blanked. I ended up putting one of the smalls on a kleenex and leaving it overnight in the viv but it was still there this morning.
The thing is he isnt showing any signs that anything is wrong in fact quite the opposite. He was out most of last night and even came out of the viv of his own accord. When I showed him the prey both in and out of the viv he showed no interest in it at all.
Could this be a winter slow down? Dont get me wrong I am not concerned (not yet anyway)just interested to know if anyone elses corns have shown signs of hibernation. I intend to offer him again in a weeks time. Incidently the last time he ate was feb the 1st and for those that dont know he is 34" long and 17 months old and is well built for his size. (dont know bout weight I am getting some scales next week) |

Know I am a bit late coming into this topic Steve, but it certainly sounds like what Kellog went through - and it took 13 weeks for him to feed. On advice from these guys I kept him on his normal feeding schedule, offered him the mouse, was refused, left it in viv, took it out next morning, waited until next feeding day and repeated....every 5 days for 13 weeks!!
Main thing is to keep an eye on Colin's weight...he shouldnt be losing too much if it is cos he is horny as it is a natural fast - and that is certainly what it sounds like.
They do like to worry us and I am just glad we have the forum to keep us sane  !!

Snickers has a lovely viv by the look of it and she has grown so much since your last pic its lovely to see Godzchild. It took Colin about two months before he felt confident in his viv. During the day he is quite often sat with his head poking out of his hide surveying the world but I have noticed the last few days (since he shed) he has been ultra active and is now as we speak checking the viv for an escape route. I can only assume (as I dont have enough experience to fall back on) that this is some kind of breeding behaviour and that he wants some snakey love. |

Until I moved Snickers to her larger viv, daytime, night time...neither made a difference this was a common scene. Now I find her only sticking her head out from under her log or out of her cave wherever she is at during the day.[quote]Originally posted by elament

Yeah I think if you get a good one stick with them. He breeds all his own food so I can vouch for where they come from and how they are despatched. He has been invaluable with my littlun Xena who has had feeding issues in the past as he is supplying me with one day old pinkies that go down a treat. Cant fault him mate. |

Lowestoft pet and reptile on blackheath road in Lowestoft. James there is the boss (dont tell his mrs leanne) they are really good he even delivers my feeders to the door on a weekly basis. Cant knock him bless him he has been a godsend to me. |

Yeah cant grumble mate I been using the same dealer since i got him and I have to say all the advice I have got from him in the past has been sound and very much in line with what I have heard you guys say on here

Editted to add: It came as part of the kit but i think it should have been about £12 but my rep dealer threw it in as part of the viv kit. (He does cracking deals and actually gives good advice)
I got the viv (new) the bowl a hide a heatmat a on off stat a thermometer (though it was a dial one) substrate three meals and the snake (when I got him he was a yearling about 26" long) all for £110 |

Did you make the bowl? It look similar to my XL ExoTerra one but different colour and slightly different size? I ain't seen them in that colour.

I got digital thermometers in the warm end and just use the dial ones in the cold end
Editted to add: to be fair they are redundant because my livingroom is a constant 21c so its not an issue I just stuck them there coz they came with the vivs so I stuck em in the cold ends for the fun of it |

Sounds like he has the raging horn, sometimes males especially can be really quite eager, kinda like a teenager on viagra. My hurricane is like that! I would suggest waiting now, give it a few weeks and he will be back on hos food no problem. I doubt the changing of the viv is to blame, they don't usually take much notice! That thermometer in your first pic, its crap, I could be more accurate with my little finger! Get your self a digi thermometer, they are awesome. I used to use the ones in you pic, until I found out how innacurate they are, a couple of vivs still have them stuck to the back, and with the digital, the difference can be as much as 10 -12 degrees! |

The only other thing I have changed is the layout of the viv. Since he went into shed I removed some of the hanging plants from where i was hanging them from the vent at the top back of his viv and used the branches to make a framework which i draped the hanging plants over forming a canopy from one hide to the other. as seen in the pic below.

Well there is def something in the air alright Colin was more active last night than I have ever seen. He actually came out twice last night. He kept loitering around the front glass and made such a show of himself until I let him out a second time and when I put him back I literally had to fight him back into his viv as he kept slithering out again!!! Itss got to be breeding activity otherwise if it was hibernation surely he would be curled under his hide and staying there wouldnt he???? |

Dunno it could just be coincidence but... we fed Xena tonight and had colin out a little later and he defo had a whiff of something and kept heading for her viv?
For those of you that are watching the Xena story unfold she had another two pinkies this evening and was again looking for more so I am thinking it may be time to step up the size of the pinkies as these one day olds seem to be going down very easily now.
