Hi all i'm new to all this snake keeping so forgive me if my questions are a little on the daft side!

I,ve got a blue corn had it for under a week now tank is all set up and hiding places subtrate all in, using a small heat mat and temp is barley 25 is this ok?

also when we first got him he was very active around tank and was great to handle slithering up ya jumper ect

Trouble is now he just hides away and when i take him out to handle he just stays wrapped up and will not move

i moved him into another room because i set up a webcam to see if my dog pesters it while were at work and she wines and constantly stares at the viv so i've moved snake into a quieter room locked away and safe from the dog

any ideas??

there's no such thing as a 'silver' corn.......

and there's no such thing as a '1 week rule' - it's a guide, it's advice, just best-practice!

ok good!
The pet shop also didn't tell me about it but it is fine!

I'd still leave him though for 4 or 5 days. Let him explore- he's obviously slowly building his confidence to come out of his hide. Go in his viv for water changes and poop cleaning. Also grab a handful of aspen and rub in your hands and return it to the viv; this'll leave your scent for him to learn without the stressing of the holding.

I put both together using a rubber band or electrical ties then place directly on a piece of vinyl* that covers the mat, not on the aspen. If you put them on the aspen (or other substrate) the temperature of the mat will be much higher than 30*C in order to penetrate the aspen and get the top of the aspen to 27-30*C.

Even though the snake may be on top of the substrate most of the time, they will burrow underneath right onto the hot mat.

Which is why when using a mat I don't put any aspen in the hide at all, I'd use a small piece of vinyl same size as the mat; and only a light sprinkling outside where the rest of the mat is. To give them burrowing fun and a medium to poop on, I put loads of aspen everywhere else other than the mat.

EDIT: * People use vinyl as its an excellent heat conductor and sits between the mat and the snake.

a 3ft corn will be happy in a 3x1 or if you really wanted him to have a bit of space you could use a 3x2 although its up to you..

Yeah I think they just make it up to get a sale!

Possibly around 18 months old I'd say but depends on weight too.

That stat is fine, its Habitat's version of the one I suggested. Both are perfectly fine and built for the job. The other Microclimate one was a bit cheaper though; the brand of product doesn't matter as long as you get a reputable one so feel free to shop around in future.

sounds like it

thanks all ordered stat last night this one

www.valuevivariums.co.uk/komodo-habitat-thermostat-p-1741.html

thought i'd match the make of mat with the stat just to make sure there compatible

snake is 34" long

matey in shop said he was 6months old but going by the amount of bull he's fed me i guess he's wrong once again!!

guess he wanted to get a sale in he new i was new to all this and has given me some pretty rubish advice so far!!
elament Posted - 15/02/2010 : 11:32:15
Agreed...my Colin is approx 34" long and he is 17 months old

A mat stat and temp stat are very similar, they do pretty much the same thing, the others are pulse stats and dimmer stats, they do pretty much what they say on the tin. Agreed with above, at 3 ft you are looking at a year minimum, if he is younger then that's some serious power feeding!

A microclimate on/off stat is what I'd recommend. Here's a link. I've bought a few of these and from this site so can say they're pretty good.

going to order a therm there are a few types?
" mat stat " and " temp stat " which one would i need?
n/a Posted - 14/02/2010 : 20:39:03
Do you have a thermostat? If you were getting (allbeit on a dial thermometer) 25*c 6 inches from the mat, the mat would have been running A LOT higher than 30*C.
HannahB Posted - 14/02/2010 : 11:58:46
if hes about 34" long then id guess at well over 6months..possibly nearer 18months at that length
