Hi, i have made this for my corn
I have sanded all rough edges, what should i do to disinfect before i put it in? should i also varnish? id rather go for a natural look. thanks. |

Thanks people! i have soaked it in bleach for about 2 hours, then cleaned with fairy liquid and gave a good rinse and left in the oven at 100c for about 2 hours, will make a bit more tonight to get it super dry!
will post pics when its all finished :) Ben |

Kellog has natural wood in his viv and we have always disinfected the wood then baked it in the over at about 160oc for about an hour. My husband did once try sanding and varnishing a piece of wood...but Kellog couldnt get a good grip on it and kept slipping. Definitely agree about going for the natural look and it also gives them something rough to rub against when they are going into shed.

we cook ours in the oven if their small enough and disinfect and leave to dry over the heaters for a few days for the bigger stuff. make sure theyr really really dry tho before you put them in xx |

i would just put them in the oven seeing there small enough,1-2 hours on a low heat but take the plant off first. |

That is an old archived thread about preparing found wood, it may help out.
When i make things from wood for my snakes i always soak in a 10% bleach - water solution overnight, rinse thoroughly and then bake in the oven for an hour or two.
I have had no issues yet. |
