Posted - 23/11/2009 : 23:46:52 ive had a cornsnake for around 8 weeks now its 17month old and ive had no problems with it untill it bit my sister while i was handling it but then i realised she had been with the rabbit in the morning since then i think i have lost my confidence handling it i dont do it as much and if i do im pretty weary, ive just tryed to pick it up tonight and it darted towards the glass, might just be in a grumpy mood, also it spends most its time outside the hide so it cant really be scared of me can it? any help or idea's to BOOST my confidence would be sweet, cheers |

Posted - 24/11/2009 : 03:27:41 I have to agree with Kehhlyr. This is not something that is going to happen quickly. You need to be patient and build up your confidence slowly which you will if you go back to handling your snake as though it was a hatchling again. It is obviously very happy with you - if I read your post correctly he allowed you to stroke him while he drank, which a lot of owners dont even get to see. That shows real trust. He has shown his trust in you now you show your trust in him....
Try and handle him without gloves if you can....scales against skin is what you really want. Just be calm and confident - fake it until you make it! Pick him up and let him run through your fingers, but keep it short to only 5/10 minutes. Then carefully return him to his viv. Just keep doing this and as you gain your confidence you can keep him out for longer. It really is a case of going back to basics again.
Putting something like a glove or a sock which you have worn into his viv should also help, so your smell becomes part of his life.
Just trust your snake that he was following his natural instincts when he bit your sister, cos she smelled of his prey. But you dont, so get him out, handle him and , as I said before, fake your confidence until you can really feel it.
Let us know how it goes.

Posted - 24/11/2009 : 00:28:56 he probably only bit your sister because he could maybe smell food after she's been holding the rabbit |

How long is the snake roughly??
about 3 foot now |

Posted - 24/11/2009 : 00:05:24 You could try handling you snake wearing think gloves, no i'm not taking the micky. If you know you cant be hurt you'll be more at ease while handling. Hope this helps. |
