hiya,
Little Sammie (or not quite as little any more) has just reached 3ft at the age of 16 mnths. She is currently in a 1.5ft by 1.5 ft viv so i know in the next few months when she gets a little bigger she will need a new viv. She is extremely active, and though we get her out the viv daily she is always roaming and climbing around so i would like to get here the best viv possible with lots of space for places to explore. i found a 4 x 2 x 2 wooden viv on 888reptiles but my partner is worried that regardless of the amount o stuff i put in the viv the huge space change with freak her out?
Also since i currently use a glass viv the heat mat has been on the outside, i am worried if i put it on the inside she is likely to burn. Is there anything i can put on top of the heat mat as well as substrate to prevent this?
Sorry it is such a long post, thanks for any advice

best thing to do with regards of heat mat is fix the stat probe to the mat that way the mat will only get to what you set the stat at and not go over temp trying to get the heat through the substrate |

i would not worry about going from glass to wood viv. as for the heat mat, as long as you put enough bedding down on the mat ur snake wont get burnt. if u put too much bedding down then it will burrow into the bedding and get near the mat. wen u come to change from one viv to the other i would personally put the bedding from the old viv in as well, it will help ur snake to settle better as it will have the smells it is use to on it. just add a few hides and lots of wood and plants to fill up the tank and it should be fine. but i would look on here or ebay for a viv sometimes u get extras, eg heat mat, wood etc and it will be cheaper in price. hope this helps. |

Hiya Michelle!
Four foot would be the absolute maximum for a corn, they do perfectly well in 3 foot vivs. As your partner has said, big spaces can stress snakes and lead to loss of appetite etc. I have my boy in a 4 foot viv, but he is over 5 feet long. If you really want the viv you could always partition off one end to make it temporarily smaller, or just cram it with hides, plants, branches etc. If done properly a settled snake shouldnt get too stressed.
Wooden vivs are fine to have a heatmat on the inside. I have nothing but substrate over the top of mine, though some people on here use a piece of lino over the top aswell. Just make sure whatever you put over the top will allow the heat to penetrate, and of course have your mat on a stat, monitored by (ideally) digital thermometers.
