Hi there, my new corn is due his frst feed tomorrow (I've had him seven days). Bit worried about how to feed him out of his faun. Want to feed him out due to using chippings as substrate. I haven't seen him out at all since I got him, apart from when he tries to escape when I change his water. He does this even though I haven't touched him or moved his hide, so water changing has become a two-person operation (one picking the water up, one ready to stop the snake). Has anyone got any tips on how to make his first feed as stress free as possible? |

Left him in the kitchen, on his own, with the door closed and a cloth over the box for over an hour. More worried with how stressed he seems rather then not eating, but I suppose I'm used to adults and a hatchling royal who wouldn't flinch if a bomb went off. I suppose he (Shylah) has only been here for a week... |

Glad you managed to get him in the feeding box without calling out the army!
How long did you leave him in the box with the pinkie? Did you watch him? Some snakes are shy and wont eat if they are being watched. What you could do is leave him in the box for a longer period, covered with a towel so he feels totally secure.
If you have returned him to his viv when he didnt feed then wait until his next feed is due before you try again. I know this might seem strange and that you will want to try again as soon as possible, but it is the best thing to due rather than stress him with continually offering him food when he may not be ready/settled enough to feed yet.
I am sure others can add to this and explain it better....

 Military ops indeed.
Let us know how the feed goes tomorrow. Pick him up confidently, chances are it will be fine.

Yup, agree with SB. if he's fed out of viv then there no risk of indegestion at all. I feed in vivs though, mainy because i haven't got a feeding tub. I remove all decor and put kitchen roll to cover the sub and let lose minnie!

He will just be feeling secure now, and so will want to investigate. Have the feeding tub ready, and simply pick him up calmly and put him in, then introduce dinner! Leave him to eat, let him push the prey fully down, and then carefully lift him back into his usual house. Stay calm and as steady as possible through the whole thing, and you will be fine.
If very worried, just feed in the viv on a dish, plate or piece of paper. Warning though, feeding this way doesnt 100% stop the danger of substrate ingestion, and some snakes that are fed in the viv will mistake your hand for food!  |
