is it safe to use this in a corn snake vivarium?
i want to use just the stem and twine some together to make vines
mainly because im too tight to buy them

If you only basically want the vine bit, no leaves, then why not get roll of coarse twine from a discount shop.
It's fairly cheap and because of how coarse it is, it can look really good sometimes. |

hehe, snakes are very inquisitve, so you never know!
The vines on ivy aren't that strong? You may be better off buying a reptile vine, but they do cost a fair bit.

well as it's only going to go from corner to corner close to the roof of the viv the snake probally wont even come into contact with it
it wont have any leafs just the vine bit |

Although Ivy is on the Toxic for reptiles list, because Cornsnakes wont try to eat it, then it is fairly safe to have in a viv.
The only way I would say it is unsafe is if the snakes try get in the soil, which they can do but with the aid of a pringles lid over the plant pot, then problem was solved.
I have used it in a viv before, it takes AGES to grow, but can look really nice.
I bought a small english ivy in a pot from a garden centre (£2.99) and shook the soil off and rinsed the roots under a tap. I then re-potted it with my snake-safe soil.
After it had only grown about 3 inches in 6 months, I decided it wasn't good enough, so bought a 6ft plastic one from Wilkos for a fiver. |

Ivy is generally safe, but I don't think I would bother if it's from the garden.
Live plants can be used successfully, but you need to guarentee that they have had no contact with chemicals whats-so-ever (including fertilizers in the soil) so sometimes it's hard to do if you haven't grown it yourself in a pot.
Even if you don't put chemicals in your garden the man next door still might and they can be washed into your soil with rain water.
If you do decide to do it with just the vines you will need to give them a really good clean and possibly dry them our first. |
