My new hatchling corn is in a small glass viv, with a secure lid and heat-mat ect. but because the heat mat only heats the stuff on top of it, the thermometer says its about 20-24 degrees in the hot end... I have a habistat temp. control, with tamper-proof gauge and its set to 28-30 degrees at the hot end and about 18-24 degrees at the cool end. Is it just my thermometer playing up because it's placed on cold glass, or is my heat-mat not working? thanks. |

Okay, I will be exactly what Matty suggested, but I have to buy a new thermometer.... This is my 3rd in nine days lol. |

I've brought the temperature on the thermostat down a bit to 28-30, and moved the probe so it is just a few mm above where the substrate lies. I also thinned it out some more, and moved the scraped off substrate into the cool end. Hope this is better ^^ |

It does sound handy, but Dimika is a bit on an acrobat and he would defiantly get out, as the lib would have to be partially lifted to get the probe inside. |

I've got the whole digital thermometer inside my tank. The readout has a sucker on the back so it's attached to the back of the glass tank. It means my thermometer probe is always on top of the substrate, exactly where Twilight sits so I can see at a glance that the temp is correct. It's handy 'cos I check the temp roughly 20x a day!! |

I would Stumpy, but the lid on my viv would not be secure and there are no holes to feed it in through. |

No!
Clear most of the substrate away from the bottom over where the heat mat is, and put the thermometer ontop.
Tape the thermostat probe directly onto the heat mat outside the tank (make sure its in contact with the dark bit of the heat mat, not the edge).
Then, increase the temp on the thermostat until it reads 28*C on the thermometer.
You would be better off buying a digital thermometer. The are alot more accurate and dont cost much from ebay. |

Dimika seems happy though, when I pick him up out the warm end he's always warm as well. I use aspen shavings, thinly layered at the hot end and thicker at the cold end. |

I have an exo-terra thermometer, that dial is already on 30-32 degrees and I also have a one that changes color to indicated the temperature; thats says 22 degrees outside the viv at the hot end. |

Dont rely on what it says on the thermostat. Use a thermometer and change the dial on the stat until its about 28*C above the heat mat. What type of thermometer are you using? and what substrate? |
