Posted - 27/09/2009 : 14:20:32 Its a month today since Aura shed for the first time and she last fed a few days before that - havent got her sheet infront of me so cant remember the exact date..
I've tried braining, splitting the side, scenting with a chick, leaving in over night, leaving her and the pinkie to get better aqainted for an hour or so... but no joy..
I really dont know what else to try apart from Luke making a pinkie smoothie or something but i dont want to stress her out any more than neccessary..and I dont really want to get her feeding with a pinkie smoothie incase she gets fussy about eating proper pinkies - could that happen??
She seems fine in herself.. drinking normally and is usually out and about in her faun attempting to hide (which she really cant do well!!) I don't handle her except to move her to a tub for feeding but it's getting to the point now where we are talking about taking her to the specialist rep shop where Luke got Lucien from and seeing if they can get her feeding but I want to make sure that there is nothing else I can try before resorting to someone else attempting..
She was the biggest of the clutch and when we got her she weighed in at 6g.. need to weigh her again to see if thats changed but could her being the biggest of the clutch have anything to do with her not feeding??
Also.. she will go right up to it and nudge it with her nose/face but its almost as if she doesnt really know how to eat it or pinkies just aren't her thing.. i even wafted the chick infront of her but she wasnt interested in it...
I need some help please... the last thing i want to do is take her to the shop incase when she comes back she goes back to not wanting to feed again
ideas on a post card please..... |

Have you checked with the rep shop re trying with tails like I did with Shen?

Posted - 03/10/2009 : 02:00:24 It is a method i would only use after trying all of the other ones, but it is certainly less cruel than letting the snake die of starvation and far less stressful than forcing a feeding syringe down its throat.
Remember though, snakes do come from hotter countries and will not have a 24/7 supply of water as they have in a vivarium... so it may be less cruel than you think.
There are actually some snake species that benefit from only having water available to them every few days. Off the top of my head i cannot remember what the species were though.
EDIT: And while i remember, it is not only mentioned on the dark side, it is a technique that many european breeders have used to succesfully kick start a snakes feeding. |

Posted - 03/10/2009 : 01:53:56 I certainly feel that force feeding with a pinkie press must be a last resort and if used should be done by someone who is experienced at doing it....but the thought of the water starvation method horrifies me, I am not surprised it is only mentioned on the 'dark side'. I guess I can see the logic of it but a snake can go for a long time without food, but to deprive it of water is cruel.
HannahB - have you been weighing Aura regularly? What is her weight loss? xxx |

Posted - 02/10/2009 : 20:12:42 I am not sure if you are a member over on the dark side, but there is a technique that they use for none feeders that they call the water starvation method... they seem to swear by it and it has been used recently to succesfully get two western hognoses that had not eaten for 12 months after hatching to eat (as one of many examples).
It is where you remove the snakes water bowl for about a week, and then offer the snake a dripping wet prey item. The snake then drinks from the prey item and decides to eat it to get all of the water.
HOWEVER, i would say you really do need to keep a close eye on the snake to make sure i does not become too dehydrated.
I would actually try this long before i tried a pinky press. |

Do you have a pinky syringe for the mush feeding ? |

Posted - 01/10/2009 : 12:13:51 i tried feeding her last night..put her in a super small little tub (colselaw tub to be precise!) and left her and the pinkie in it overnight with a bottle top of water but no luck..she was super moody this morning with me so dont think she liked it much! am going to give her one more try on monday with a boiled pinkie but am not massively hopeful.. will keep my fingers crossed as if she doesnt feed then i think luke will be making a pinkie smoothie for her.. nice |

The only place is where I bought him, and I'm not sure it's a good idea to take him back there... not sure it's a bad idea either, it's just that at the time they said we'd be ok without a stat, couldn't remember the exact hatching date or the exact date he last fed.
I'm not expecting the vet to get him to eat, I just want the reassurance that there is nothing wrong with him and that he's doing well. If he's healthy and 100% fine then I'll just need to be patient and simply keep trying until he finally decides he's hungry, I guess. |

Posted - 27/09/2009 : 20:23:39 It would'nt hurt her to leave her in overnight , do it last thing , they are more active at night . Make sure the rub is quite small , she needs to be constantly aware that food is there , if she can scoot to one end she can still disregard it . |
HannahB |
Posted - 27/09/2009 : 20:17:08 Ive tried that she goes to the opposite end of the rub and stays there.. even when ive covered her up and left her for an hour or so.. but thanks |

Posted - 27/09/2009 : 20:08:17 Have you tried putting her in a very small rub with the pinky in ? I use this method with my 2 year old guy , never seems to want to feed , put him and a large mouse in a 5 litre rub , you can guess how large he is compared to the rub . Put the lid on then put the rub in his viv with him and mouse in , leave him in peace and he has eaten 100% of the time so far . Try that with yours . |
