Is yours on a stat , I have a mat under one of mine , touching the glass . It just never seems to reach a temp hot enough to crack it . [/quote]
Yes its on a stat and I've a digital thermometer - hot end gets to about 29c at its hottest. In fact I've changed the stat on the glass viv as I wasn't convinced it was doing its job properly! |

Posted - 23/09/2009 : 21:05:48 if you're setting up a new glass viv then turn the stat on a little way for 24hours, then up a bit more for another 24 hours then up to around the desired temperature, so there's a gradual build up of heat instead of the mat being on full power and heating up really quickly - which cracks the glass!
DO read the manufacturers instructions (although disregard any that say put the mat on the side of the tank for snakes!!) as airflow is ESSENTIAL with some brands of mats such as Exo-Terra Heatwave, which conveniently come with little feet to raise the bottom of the viv to allow the airflow |

There are some brands of mat that need an airgap. (can't remember what they are offhand, Sorry)
Most mats should be able to go directly against the glass, providing it has a stat attached, it shouldn't crack the glass. Unless the glass goes into extreme cold quickly.
Likewise, I say it shouldn't, because I've NEVER known a stat controlled mat to crack glass.

Posted - 23/09/2009 : 01:53:33 You need to create an air gap between the heat mat and the glass of the viv, i believe a thin piece of polystyrene can be used, i am sure there are other things that can be used as well. |
