to our shock during lolas clean out, we found a hole the size of a 2p coin on the bottom of her viv. turns out our heatmat which wev had for 2 weeks has broken and is stone cold all over apart from one point which has badly burnt my hand and the viv. lola's fine thankfully but just wondering where to go from here. the lady at the petshop said it was fine to use with a plaastic viv so long as we used the spacers which we did. are there any other ways to heat her viv without killer heatmats? xx

For the two people asking if the heat mat in question was connected to a thermostat... that is irrelevant in this case because rose said in her original post that the mat was stone cold apart from one spot which was very hot, so unless the thermostat probe was directly over that spot it would not of helped.

Abbie, i think you are supposed to put the polystyrene between the heat mat and the glass of your viv, this creates an air gap which prevents the glass from cracking.

We have a heat mat which is on a stat and it still managed to crack the glass of our viv - had to get new glass for the bottom. We set it up as per the instructions from the rep shop - polystyrene under the heat mat, then heat mat, then viv. Has anyone else had this experience?

As Paulasparky, was it on a thermostat. Without one heatmats can get to over 110f which is probably enough to melt plastic. Heatmats are safe on a thermostat so dont worry about getting another one.

I have heard of this a few times (with exo terra's heat mat). I would never use them.

Did you have it on a thermostat?? If not you NEED to get one. It controlls the temp of the mat and prevents this sort of thing from happening.

i lost the reciept!gonna get my fella 2 go as hes better at spitting his dummy out til he gets what he want than i am :) but judging by the state of my hand it could have killed poor lola so im a bit wary of gettin another heatmat. any1 ele ever had a problem like this? xx

I would take it back to the shop and ask for a new 1...specially if its only 2 weeks old,
