Hi little question I have an Exo Terra 30x30x30 starter corn snake kit and it came with the heat mat and I just wondered weather it should be on the outside not the inside? It doesn't get too hot for it to hurt the snake

Sexybear, Jessie prefers to sit in the plant in the cooler end to be honest.

My Viv does have a wire mesh top as its a Exo Terra one but like I just said to Sexybear, Jessie prefers to sit at the top in the plant in the cooler part. She seems the happiest there, I am hoping to pick up a dimmer or pulse stat for the lamp if not I have an Infrared bulb as to not to annoy Jessie too much switching on and off

regardless of how big the mat is, or how warm it gets without you will still need a thermostat - these are essential bits of kit for any heat source.

is that a mesh top on the viv? if so that will explain where all your heat is going

Did just read that the temp during the day should be between 25 and 30 degrees and at night no lower than 18 degrees. I havent had her long but since I've had her shes fed and kept it down and seems to move around a little, so I might be worrying over nothing. My mind will be at rest as soon as I get this stat and put another hide in.

one end should be at 30, the other at around 22-23 with a temp gradient in between. if your hot end is only 26 then I am guessing your cool end will be too cold.

Honsty is all i can be
Something i would advise is having two hides one in the warm end and one in the cool end. Here are a couple of links to make you'r own hides. Hope this helps

Thanks for being honest, it will only be a few days until I get my stat.

Jessie doesn't really go over to the warm side of the tank anyway, i have her hide half on the mat and half off and she chooses to sleep all curled up at the top of the tank in the plant.

Ok on an honest note i would have to let someone with more experience than me answer this.

I cant make it any hotter until I get the stat for the infrared lamp, I'm measuring the temp with the thermometer thats in the tank near to the hot end.

26 is the hot end! can you make it any hotter safley i think it should be around 29 - 30 hot end.
What are your cool end temps ?
How are you measuring temps ?

(p.s i give my first correct piece of advice woo-hoo, im learning, im so pleased)
Brookestar Posted - 14/09/2009 : 22:36:14
heat mat should go on the outside with a piece of cardboard on top so its not directly underneath the viv

Dont have the lamp going yet, 26 degrees is the hot end and the viv is glass, the heat mat really doesn't get that hot, its a very low wattage its made by exo terra and its the small mat.
n/a Posted - 14/09/2009 : 22:24:27
Im guessing its glass or plastic if you dont have a thermostat at the moment i wouldnt put it in the viv i would wait till you have a thermostat before you use it. Are you running a heat bulb at the minute then ?.

If you'r not running a bulb at the moment and the mat is your only heating i would place the heat mat under the viv with maybe a piece of lino or a towel between the two so it doesnt get too hot in the viv.
26 degrees is that at the hot or cool end ?. My viv is running 30.1 degrees hot end and 22.0 cool end

Im still new so wait to see what some more experienced ppl say

Its exo terra viv and I'm waiting on a stat for a infared light, but I think its such low wattage that its just right. The viv is at 26 degrees

Hi there is it going on a wooden or glass viv. Do you have a thermostat
